push rod
Changed out the standard wire push rod the other day for the tail rotor. Used a Quick UK that I had to modify to get it to work. Also had to modify the ball link location. It works great and removed some weight in the back end of my P50. This also allowed me to remove the 45g of lead off the battery tray in the front that was used to balance the heli. What I noticed is the heli felt different in the air as a result of the weight reduction. Todd

YES! Anything you can do to pull weight out, especially on the Pantera, is a good thing. 45gr is enough to feel if you are really in tune with your heli.

As a point of comparison, the fuel mass delta between full and empty is just over one order of magnitude greater than what is being offered as a data point. E.g. fuel consumed during a flight is approximately 500 grams, a bit more than 10X the 45g change.

Need to Clarify
I feel the need to say this...

I did not mean to open a can of worms. The "feeling of different" could have been related to a number of factors and not necessarily the 45g reduction. After all I was flying in winds that ranged between 15-20mph. The weight of the Pantera has never been a concern of mine. The "extra weight" is due to the Pantera having beefier parts in certain locations, which adds to its durability and lower costs in replacement parts. I have not been running the recommended equipment to power the electronics. I have been using a much lighter and smaller MaH LiFe battery which is grams lighter then the recommended Lipo with regulator. So, I had to add 45 grams to the front of the heli to get it to balance. Had I been running the recommended gear this weight would not have been needed. When I changed the tail push rod, I had to loose the horizontal stab. that I was using. Had I not used this from the beginning, I would not have had to add as much weight (21g less) to the front. I also only changed the wire push rod because the carbon one just looks cool and I needed to replace the red balls as they were showing wear (which I had on hand). Simply replacing the push rod would not have reduced the weight that much. There were a number of factors involved that reduce weight. What I should have done is weighed all the bits I took off and compared it to what I put on to give a fare comparison. Anyway, this is a great flying heli and I love its durability. It was also one of the best purchases I have made. This is also the heli that my children are going to learn on. Just my opinion.

By the way, I have a Trex 600 Nitro and I fly the Pantera 50 more simply because when it goes down my pocket does not get as light as it does when the Trex meets the ground. For instance, replacement Trex 600 L frame and bottom plate just cost me over $90 compared to P6 frames (both sides) for less then the cost of one Trex frame. Thus I am willing to push my limits and try new things on the Pantera then I am with the Trex. To be fare I have never weighed the Trex or the Pantera to see how they compare in weight. Once I get the Trex back to flying shape I will weigh both birds just to see. I am also planning on selling the Trex since I don't fly it as much. I have been regretting its purchase. Should have put that money to other things.

I hope this helps to clarify my earlier post

I hope John will post more about what he is getting at regarding fuel consumption and location.
