A throttle servo closing doesn't make the engine sputter...It just drops RPMs quickly or kills the engine.

Battery is possible though however unlikely.

Do you fly alone? From the sounds of the guys response on here it sounds like you fly alone. This is hindering you in more ways than you can imagine. If other guys around you saw what happened you could have gotten an opinion as to what happened by having another set of eyes on it. Also there is so much to be learned from flying with others....exchanging ideas ...etc.

Just my two cents......and I hate pennys....wish they would quit making them.

When the chicken dance started...was it still in idle up?
Or did it crash?
I was still in Idle up when it was sputtering. I hit the ground pretty hard but not enough to destroy the heli. As soon as I hit the ground the heli went wide open and we both started dancing. The helicopter and me trying to figure out what the hell to do
Was the throttle link on after the mess was over?
Yes, it was still connected.
Do you fly alone?
I fly alone. I recently found a local club. I just got my AMA membership a week or two ago and I just need to meet the people at the club.

Everyone has been more than great helping me here but I am never going to be able to keep adding to my fleet if I can't keep my current stuff trouble free I have been spending my weekends flying but yesterday I only spent half the day flying(Trex 550 is still strong) and the other half fishing. I am just so nervous to get another nitro right now. I was going to get a new Trex 700 N this week. I realize there are better helicopters out there but I have never had a 700 size and I do not want to deal with 2 Lipos for each flight. I will if I have to. I am still mulling over what to do. Now that you gentlemen have given me the throttle return or spring idea I feel a bit more comfortable. Decisions/Decisions

Yes, it was still connected.
That could very well mean the RX pack went dead.

I'm assuming you hit throttle hold or at least turned off idle up when the CD started

I know brain lock happens...I have freaked out before because my heli wouldn't shut off...I realized finally that throttle trim doesn't work in throttle hold.DOH...lol....

I also know that when the engine is sputtering and about to die,the last thing on your mind is flipping out of idle up.

That is exactly why my normal mode is 0-0-0-0-0....acts as a second "hold"

After some consideration I am thinking of pulling the electronics out of this heli and getting a Goblin 500 because it uses mini servos and I have been interested in the Goblin. I was having issues with the Mini Vbar and vibrations on the NX4. I got it to fly correctly but it was on the edge where it would twitch every once in a while from the vibrations. I had to use a strap and really tighten the vbar down. It's a toss up between a Goblin and another nitro. Either way I probably will end up getting both anyways.... A case of Torco fuel just arrived at my house and I have a brand new Align starter that I am going to need to use Thx again for the help.

I finally was able to start taking the helicopter apart. No wires are disconnected and everything works fine when I power up the electronics. I guess I'll never know what caused the heli to sputter.

What techniques do people use to remove dirt/oil from the heli? It is everywhere. It's on the electronics, servos, etc... Can I use 409 cleaner and then add lubricant to the parts when I put them back together? To bad I just can't take a hose to the thing

More important is to know why you couldn't shut it down. Was the flight battery disconnected from the impact?

I use a little hand pump sprayer from Ace Hardware filled with 80% rubbing alcohol and a toothbrush for cleaning. A little spray detailer on a rag to wipe things down and shine it up. Relube the bearings as well.R.I.P. Roman

That's a good question. Nothing was disconnected and I did not try to power up again until at least a week later. Do you think my voltage dropped below the threshold in the Vbar in turn disabling it? This is my first Vbar and I do not have the 'Pro' version of the software to make those adjustments.

That's one long chicken dance! I agree with the towel or blanket or some other means! Sorry about your mess! Hope you figure out what caused the power loss!
As far as for the cleaning, used an air compressor to blow off most of the dirt so you won't be wiping mud around with a cleaner product! Just make sure it doesn't contain ammonia!
