The way I read may be different from things I read here. I always go to myHOME, seeing my subscriptions. I have the automatic mark read after 30 minutes turned off. I read the posts I want and then I always clicked on the "Mark New Read" button to reset them all. It was simple and worked for me. Now I see 6 choices (any one of 3 buttons with the check mark on or off). I never can remember which combination does what I want and it usually takes me somewhere between 2 and 8 clicks to get what I want. I will eventually get it right, but there is nothing at all obvious to me about how to use the new options.
Mark responded:
After you are finished with MyHome then click Start Here. Then at the bottom keep clicking what's yellow (NEXT or MORE). Marked read will take care of itself. Don't think just click yellow.
I am sorry to be such a dunce about this. When I am at myHOME and am completed reading everything I care about, it reads "New Subs" at the top of the myHOME page. If I click on that, none of the 3 new buttons are yellow. There is a "Start Here" at the bottom of the page. When I click on that, only the Home button is yellow and that does not clear the yellow "not read yet" status. So, I am still clicking around until I finally get something to work.

I just reread Mark's post and realized you were not talking about any of the 3 new buttons. I think it will take many (unknown number) of clicks on Next or More to finally do as you suggested. The way read is to go through only the yellow highlighted posts in only my subscribed topics. Then I was looking for the one click that did the same as the one "Mark New Read" that used to be there. Still looking.

I really like what you tried to do. This would be (maybe is) better than the old way. I ran into one problem. The MARK SUBSCRIPTIONS [X] READ was checked and the HOME button was yellow and the other 2 were blue. I clicked on the yellow HOME button and it did switch to the home page, but posts were still yellow. I went back to myHome and refreshed, still yellow posts. What does work like a charm is to click on the NewR (blue) button. So, I don't know if that is what you intended or not. It isn't what I expected. Still, I can make it work just like I want and as I said, it's better than the old way.

Thanks!

As stated in myHOME, only subscriptions are marked read. As it is now, to mark Regular and Classifieds read, you have to do this from Start Here, NewR or NewC.Mark Ryder

I'm warming up to this feature. I still think some more intelligent design (no offense, Mark, you are plenty intelligent ) could be put into the labels for the buttons.

On a similar note, someone earlier in the thread mentioned the "U and Subscribed" marks at the upper left of the thread window when you are subscribed to a topic. I'd like to see these tools available even if you aren't subscribed. Is there a way to subscribe to a topic without replying to it? It'd be nice to be able to subscribe to a topic with a single click.

Functionality means nothing if it takes 6 pages of forum to understand it. Not all good ideas need to be integrated IMHO. The two views I see are: "what was broken that this fixed?" and "was fixing it 'helping' the client or confusing them?".Once you try steak, is hard to go back to hotdogs.

I'm not quite sure what "As stated in myHOME" means but - When I finished reading all the posts I cared about in my subscriptions, I was at myHOME, I scrolled to the bottom, the HOME button was the only thing that was yellow and I clicked on that yellow HOME button. I was taken to the HOME screen, but nothing was cleared if I then clicked on myHOME at the top of the HOME page I was taken to myHOME, as expected, but nothing was cleared, still yellow highlight on my subscriptions and if I went into any subscription, there were still plenty of posts marked yellow. I am still lost trying to mark things as read.

There are three things (time frames) that can be cleared. You are clearing subscriptions. In myHOME notice the "Last Post" column. Yellow in that column signifies new subscribed posts.
  1. MARK SUBSCRIPTIONS READ
  2. MARK REGULAR READ
  3. MARK CLASSIFIEDS READ

Mark I am sorry and I must be stupid but I see no meaning in this at all I have no clue what you said.

The only way I can clear all post is buy pushing all of the yellow tabs and that takes about 20 pages and pushes.

Can you please give us one button that will clear all post after we read the post we want to read.
Thanks for putting up with us

I like what D. Magee posted. A lot cleaner and easy to understand / navigate. I normally just click 1 2 ... Next when browsing RR.

We already have NEXT.

Change MoreR to Read R

Change MoreC to Read C

Remove the Read check box

If I am interested in the classifieds, I'll click to go there and then do the same as regular post.

Simple

Again, myHOME is about subscriptions. It's NOT about site wide NEW posts (Regular or Classified).
The only way I can clear all post is buy pushing all of the yellow tabs and that takes about 20 pages and pushes.
That's not correct. You do NOT have to click NEXT. Just check [X] Mark Read and move on (click one of three buttons). Try it.

What's being presented is extremely straight forward when considering the extra functionality of reading NEW classifieds independently of NEW regular posts.

I pushed one of the three buttons like more r

  • MARK SUBSCRIPTIONS [X] READ
  • MARK REGULAR [X] READ
  • MARK CLASSIFIEDS [X] READ
There is NOT a mark all read check box. You are marking read just what is described next to the check box. (see three above). From Start Here you review regular (mark read), then classifieds (mark read), then go home. Should there be a Mark All link somewhere?

Mark,
Thank you for the added functionality. It has been working great for me. However, to quote Elon Musk, "Any product that needs a manual to work is broken."

I think what he was referring to no the manual was the KISS method.

"Keep It Simple Stupid."

A very well known term in the software industry. That quote was not directed at anyone. When I interview people or ask them a question technical in nature I say give me the KISS method to solve X problem.

Meaning don't over complicate things if they already work?

I could be way off base of what is being said? Anyways, just my input.

Agreed and I think that's what I'm getting closer too. This topic is evolving with the starting premise that we can now surf new classifieds independently of new regular postings. Without thinking too hard, I think it's fairly straight forward to read new posts. If not, please explain the confusion.Mark Ryder
