About 80 flights on a 600SE swinging 620s @ 2200 using vbar governor. Started hearing some ringing in the boom last flight. Initially saw some fraying on the belt and was tearing down to replace. Got the belt off and found this--the lower half of the teeth are just gone pretty much the entire belt. Guide wheels and bearings are fine. Main belt pulley looks fine. Rear pulley looks fine. Belt tension was good.

Any ideas? Just old?

if it ain't broke, break it.

Did you take the guide wheels out and check them? Sometimes a little chip on the wheel will cause this. Also there may be an alignment problem somewhere. I had a static wheel have some damage on it and made the belt run on the side of it. Just recheck everything and let us know what you find. Also make sure the guide wheel shaft is snaped into the slot.

This is what you hear when the belt is loose. The belt slaps against the inside of the boom and creates a ringing sound. Perhaps your boom slipped in the clamp and caused slack during the flight.

the belt was checked right after i landed it the last time. it was definitely on the tight side of normal. i think what i was hearing was pieces of the belt breaking off and hitting the boom.

when i took the belt off there were pieces of belt just dangling that i could flick off with my finger.

i had 2 flights today on a new belt and zero issues, zero indication of wear. belt tention was set the same.

at this point i'm leaning toward old belt syndrome. i picked this heli up used. i have no idea how old that belt was, and only know it looked good when i built the kit. but, rotten rubber falls apart.

just glad i caught it when i did.

if it ain't broke, break it.

The heli may have been stored improperly by the previous owner. Here is a belt that is over 5 years old with over 600 flights on it. No noticeable wear at all.
