Boston bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev managed to say just one word to a federal judge when charges were filed against him in a makeshift courtroom held at the side of his hospital bed, "No."

No, he could not afford an attorney.

As a result, Tsarnaev, 19, who is facing the possibility of the death penalty for his alleged role in last week's terror attack, will be represented by one of the most experienced and well respected public defenders in the country, Miriam Conrad.

Conrad heads the Federal Public Defender Office in Boston and her resume includes defending "shoe bomber" Richard Reid in 2001 for trying to blow up a Paris to Miami jetliner.

"She is excellent, tough, tenacious and wise," said Tamar R. Birckhead, now a University of North Carolina law professor who worked with Conrad for four years, including on the Reid case.

Conrad and several other attorneys from her office were listed in court documents as the team representing Tsarnaev. Among them was William S. Fick, who was present at Monday's hearing held inside Tsarnaev's hospital room. Fick requested additional help from attorneys who have previously handled death penalty cases, a requirement under federal law.

Conrad and her team have a difficult case ahead of them. They are trying to keep alive many would consider to be the most hated man in America.

Conrad, 56, has led the Federal Public Defender's Office since 2005. A graduate of Harvard Law School, she has defended a number of high profile terrorism cases.

In addition to defending Reid, Conrad represented represented Rezwan Ferdaus, a U.S. citizen of Bangladeshi ancestry who was sentenced to 17 years after he was found guilty of plotting an attack on the Capitol Building and the Pentagon.

Fick, an assistant in the office, is a graduate of Yale Law, who turned down an offer on Wall Street to become a public defender.

"This is a high quality team," said Gertner, for whom Fick worked as a clerk. "It puts to lie the notion that public defenders are lesser lawyers. This is an enormously talented group."

but if there is no Public Defender Office for those who cant afford it, you could just as well summarily execute him, no need for a trial in the first place...no???...i mean to say that access to a fair trial and justice isn't (to my mind) comparable to free unemployment benefits, free education, free amenities etc etc...it's a different story altogether...my 2 cents...

True.

Other side of the coin involves how people are being radicalized to harm the people of this country.

Advocating violence should carry consequences kinda akin to a bar continuing to serve alcohol to a drunk driver.

The older guy and his wife enjoyed American welfare while the younger one enjoyed a college scholarship to become a medical doctor.

What else could America have done for these guys?

Perhaps the final act will be to provide the finest legal team for his defense. He has parents but his mother fled the country to avoid prosecution (shoplifting from a high end clothing store).

I don't think he has any room to complain about anything in this country.

I don't believe Athen's could of stopped Saddam - but maybe - They are using his Sarin
It it being used in Syria

Maybe, USA ??? the Nation has finally learned a lesson ??

At least till the next event.

He will receive all right's and privilege under the Constitution as a Citizen. Based upon fact and evidence and accountability.

No other Nation can afford such a privilege or entitlement provided to a citizen - Even Greece -- See : ECONOMY of Greece

Last major trial that made news in Greece turned into a Disney Film of Justice and Equality on the Global scale. It was ridiculous of beyond all mean's in stupid error's and circumstance over National Pride.

We have a much bigger problem now : If they over cook his right's and privileges due to POLITICAL CORRECTNESS - and Liberalize the event

Which they have already begun. The Instant they shielded him from disposition of future evidential information needed to protect the NAtion

Obama will not even address it:
Why is he afraid of telling the truth ?? to the public ???

If justice is NOT served -and the associated connections are NOT made - and it happens again -It will spin out - IT HAPPENED BEFORE!

The team Obama is already covering it -
