I'm considering putting together a helicopter to demonstrate overhead video transmission of APBA Inboard hydroplane racing. basically the heli could hover in the center of the course which is generally either 1 mile or 1 1/4 miles. The overhead perspective is a great angle to view these races. What would be a good helicopter for this sort of use? I have a 500mW transmitter on 900Mhz and do hold a radio license. This system has worked great when tested in an electric glider at ranges beyond what we'd be using for boat racing.

So I'm looking for input on an airframe and power source. Would I presume gas since we'd probably want up to 30 minute flight time? What about a GPS or other type of navigation equipment to hold it in position is 3 dimensions? Finally, what is a good tilt/pan system that won;t break the bank. This will not be a money making project so it's all out of my pocket.

So the platform I fly looks like it has the requirements you want. Bergen Observer gasser with DJI Naza H GPS. The Naza handles the heavy Bergen well and keeps it in a meter square and is sub $500. The standard camera gimbal is only 2 axis, but for static shots is fine, even for moving shots 2 axis is acceptable. I know Chris has worked with clients to mount a PhotoshipOne 3 axis gimbal (that is for sale in Hawaii I believe) The gimbal will handle 8 pounds but the heli will lift 12 if I recall. I burn about an oz of gas per minute in a hover.
