The Moly coatings used as break-in coatings are very light grey. Theay are very hard so see when applied to a piston unless the piston is removed from the cylinder to examine it. BTW if you have a vette that is invisible to radar, I will take one LOL. Don

Have seen quit a few coated pistons on the cylinders we bore for people.. The big companies have a blackish/dark grey color. The only way that coating is ruined is if something major happened to engine. Blow up or something to that extent. Where hard material is thrown through the engine. Even bores that are totally ruined with a ton of piston to cylinder clearance on them. The bore is gone but the piston still looks brand new except for maybe a duller color to it.

The piston is a American prototype piston used in a 2 types Drones,
A twin, and 2 types of single cylinders of different cc.
That I was involved with for the last 2years. and have used this on all my engine parts for three years, except instead of 120psi I use custom a very high refrigerated air pressure blaster now

The coating is applied OR blasted on at very high psi,
The coat in beds in the metal, it turn to the color in picture.

Spinning the piston at 2,000 rpm on a lathe, then applying a
3M Scotch-Brite Commercial Scouring Pad (coarse)with a lot of pressure by hand, you just get it to shine as in the picture.

A stock Zenoah piston With a 3M Scotch-Brite Commercial Scouring Pad (coarse)spinning at the same rpm, would of lost the oil cuts in a very very short time.

Benefits and Capabilities
•maintains the dimensional integrity of the substrate to within 0.5 microns with no build-up.
•withstands loads to 100,000 psi (or load capacity equal to substrate) and operates in the temperature range of -460°F to 1200°F (-273°C to 650°C). .
•offers 100% Lubricity throughout its texture.
•is inert, inorganic, non-toxic, non-distortive, non-corrosive and resistant to most fuels solvents. lt is compatible with and enhances the performance of all oils and greases.
•resists carbon build-up due to its extremely low co-efficient of friction, less than half that of graphite, Moly (MoS2) and Teflon.
•molecularly bonds to all materials and platings and can only be eliminated by removing the bonded substrate.

As a grease it is even more out standing
I my sealed bearing, melt temp of grease is 600f withstand loads of 300,000 psi,
and temps of 1,600f
Like I stated superior in everyway
but to say anything more I will have to start a business post.

If anyone is interested:

I have an XL1005 (converted to 800) it has a G230PUH; the first engine version

recently, I changed the original WA167A carburetor for the WT-990

Now the engine runs "A LOT SMOTHER" the tail now looks almost like an electric helicopter. The needles were OK as it came froom daves motors, I just closed a litthe bit the low needle.

If anyone is interested on changing the carburetor for the original (first version) of Zenoah G230PUH engine, for the Walbro WT-990; I would say: "Go for it" it´s the best upgrade you can have for this engine.

Thanks for the post as it reminded me I purchased a 990 Walbro carb over a year ago but forgot about it. I want to install it in my 1005 now. But I forget what the needle settings initially are as they are different from the 643.Setup is everything, All my heli's can fly far better than I can pilot them

Yeah Sato
Remember we talked about that a year ago or so saying the 990 was better than the 643? If you decide to try it, the 990 should be set at 1 1/8 L and 1 1/4 high to start. You may need to lean the high slightly but the low should be about right.

Range: L = 1 1/8 +/- 1/16 H = 1 1/4 +/- 1/16

Come out tomorrow if you want
Rouane showed up today shortly after I got there and said Joe NG put in two gasser planes today. One of them the motor died in flight and he tried to U turn tight back to the runway and it stalled and went in. The other one he was over the marsh making a left turn and it stayed in that turn and went in full power into the marsh, they heard it crackling in. Walked in there to find it but found nothing but ticks, in fact they brought 4 back with them and as they hung around my truck and sat on the tailgate one of them ended up on my gas tank, one he found on his hand, another Rou found on his clothes and Pete picked up one on himself after sitting on my tailgate...damn...

Anyways, tomorrow I'm flying FPV over the marsh to see if I can spot Joe's downed aircraft. If you got time, see you there!

Put the 990 I bought a year ago on my Min Air 1005 with a well used Hanson 26. Idles better ,,idles slower is very smooth in hover and works better than my 643 in all respects. I am sold!
I got to get one for my Spectra now.
Setup is everything, All my heli's can fly far better than I can pilot them

Glad you finally got to try it
I'm sure your first thoughts were, why didn't I do this sooner? I had that same idea about several things like that with my helis -- flybarless is another one you need to try, same thought!

As a matter of fact I just installed my FAI blade grip arms and removed my flybar on my Spectra in anticipation of going FBL on my Spectra. Gotta change out some worn links etc. Have to cough up the dough for a Demon unit though,,,that may take abit of time. Saw some used ones but they want 400 bucks and I used to see them new on sale for 425.Setup is everything, All my heli's can fly far better than I can pilot them
