Thanks ASC. I hope it's not cloudy.

I've seen up to 200 per hour, now that's an experince. This was back around 2001-2 I believe. It looked like sparks flying off a grinder.

It is true that a meteor shower will be visible around the dates specified in the message. The Lyrid meteor shower will reach its peak this year during the night of April 22 - 23, 2013, although it will be visible for several days before and after. However, this meteor shower is not particularly rare. In fact, it takes place around the same time each and every year. The message, which circulates in the form of a graphic is an altered variant of a 2012 message that featured another annual meteor shower, Perseid.
Since this is a yearly occurrence "rare" and "once in a lifetime" is a bit of a stretch. It's always a great show though. Between 4 and 20 per hour is the norm.

I'm not that lucky. Do search on meteorites that have stuck cars, houses and so on. They fetch a tidy sum.

Bright moon and a slight haze in the sky up in this area. Saw one or two but not worth losing any sleep over. Hope it went well for others watching!

Too bad it wasn't a "once in a lifetime" event.

What a dud.

AerialSkyCam, the lyrids is indeed an annual shower... one of amongst the lower rate of sightings at that.

For those interested, sightings will continue right up until the 25th. But, even if you are out in the country with a clear sky (no light pollution), the moon is spoiling this years event, as helidevil mentioned. That combined with the low number meteors per hour... probably not worth it.

For you folks in the U.S, the Perseids later this August is one of the best meteor showers of the year for the Northern Hemisphere. Luckily, the waxing crescent moon will be setting in the evening this year, providing optimal viewing conditions for what is easily one of the best shows of the calendar.
