Predator mild tail twitch video
Hi,

I had a friend video my Preddy in a hover today so I could show the tail. There is no violent wag or shake and the tail holds fine flying and ok in climb-outs. But there is a mild twitch. I'm guessing at this point it is just from engine vibes. It has quite a bit of vibes at idle. Some day I'll get it balanced. My Hanson modified in my Spectra (balanced only) idles sooo much smoother than this stock. I have replaced the tail thrust bearings with Boca bearings as my Century thrust bearings were trashed even though they had little time on them. Also put in a new torque tube. Checked ALL bearings throughout the drive system and all are fine.

I just would like to get opinions on what you see here. My head speed in this video is 1650

Watch at YouTube

[I edited, as my head speed could not have been 1850 as the camera strobe effect would have shown almost stopped blades as someone PM'd me and pointed out] I must have been in idle up 1 or normal which would have put me at 1650. I'm using the gv-1]

Thanks

I flew the Predator for a few years and I felt the tail always has wag issues. I went as far as replacing the whole tail with a Raptor 90 unit. I think it is just nature of the beast. Other than it working the tail servo to death, don't worry about it too much. Check your tail servo temp and make sure it is not getting too hot.One mile of road will take you one mile. One mile of runway will take you anywhere in the world.

Thanks helizrule.

I have checked the servo and it is running cool. I think it is pretty much narrowed down to engine vibes which I can't do anything about at the moment. The clutch was dialed in right around .002 or maybe a bit under. The idle vibes are way more than on my Spectra.

Thanks again for weighing in.

Honestly
Doesn't look that bad to me. Good enough just go fly!

Thanks Raja...I know I'm being picky here. I just see other helis and they are smoother in a hover. My Spectra is smoother, no twitching.

Do you think it could be a tuning issue. Some day I'll send it in to be balanced. Hoping to get to fly with you some time in April.

Thanks guys.

It goes without saying
That I'll always recommend to you or anyone to get the engine balanced. The dollars you save by not doing it will come out from some other place for repairs from vibe wear and tear. The smoother you can make the machine, the better for it in the long run especially if you intend to run it hours and hours.

You are welcome to come fly with my at any time, just let me know and I'll meet you at your convenience.

Tail wag
I own two of the original predators Sn# 12 and 13.
My wag was so bad initial it literally wag its fins off.
I went through the Aircraft screw by screw found my Gyro needed some tweaking and found the fly wheel and crank shaft out of balance.
I only found this because I got tired of the ole girl eating herself. I sent the engines to Hanson as Zenoah was of little help note : I like the Zenoah engine I do, was just not educated.
Having said that when I got them back from Hanson they hummed like tops and my twitch went away! It did cost me another $500.00
to get them fixed up which on new engines really pinched but it was well spent!
If you haven't considered it, you might check your engine.
If you have the ability to check it yourself it may be cheaper!
Just putting it out there!

Cheers
Zack
