Using smaller batteries
My figure now;

6s x 4v = 24v
3000ma = 3a
24v x 3a x 30c = 2160 watts
2160 watts / 2 = 1080 watts
Puting back 1200ma
1200ma / 4 minute flights = 300ma per min.
300ma = .3A
.3a x 60 = 18a average
18a x 24v = 432 watts

I think I could switch to a 3s 5000ma 45c battery and still be fine. Is this right?

thats pretty general..... but assuming your helicopter flies on a 6s pack now , i doubt you could gear it high enough to fly on a 3sTeam Synergy, Team FBL Rotors-------if its not broke...it will be!

Unless you change something else, and assuming a perfect world, you motor would only run at half the RPM it would at 6S, meaning your headspeed would be cut by half. There are people running low headspeed helis, successfully, but you really need to investigate that angle more fully.-----

Yeah, I wasn't even thinking about my rpm... MAN!!! Dang...thought I had something there for a minute. Lol

I was trying to see if I could use a smaller battery to get under my canopy. I'm using turnigy 3000ma and they're huge. Is there another 22.2 out there that fits under a trex 500 canopy better? Preferably 3000ma or bigger with more than 30c.

Other than that.... Am I doing all of my figuring right? I think I'm understanding this electrical setup thing. I feel kinda like a retard forgetting about my rpm. That's kinda everything in a setup.

This is right for figuring rpm too right?
22.2v x kv / gear ratio = headspeed

yea the math is right i think. if your looking for smaller batteries maybe consider another manufacturer. thunder power seems to be leading the size for what you get.Team Synergy, Team FBL Rotors-------if its not broke...it will be!

Your math is OK assuming again, a perfect world. You need to account for efficiency losses, the fact that you have drag on the blades, and a few other physical forces in play.

Multiply your answer by 0.85 or so -- it says you're 85% efficient by the time you factor in some real world effects.

What kind of flight times are you shooting for? Monster batteries are good to a point, but one of the more critical parameters with regard to heli performance is weight. Weight is not your friend. Stuffing larger batteries under the hood may be the wrong answer.

5 minute flights I'm puting back 1240ma. The figure I posted was actually about 300ma over what I'm actually puting back with a 4 minute flight. I was kinda using my MAH per a 5 minute flight (well above 4 minutes) to account for ineffiencies with a 4 minute flight.I didn't say you did it...I said I was blaming you.

MY 500 has been flying on Turnigy or Zippy Flightmax 6S 2650 mah packs. I have my timer set on my TX at 5:30 and land shortly thereafter. I put back about 1800 - 1900 mah worth of juice when they recharge.

Larger batteries will also really mess with your CG...
