Queries about Phoenix sim.
Alright, so the little 10 inch Windows netbook that I had for tunning my FBL gave up on me. Last week, I finally went out and bought a new windows 8 laptop for the purpose (which by the way, after getting used to the touch interface, I prefer over my mac!).

Anyway, I downloaded the demo version of Phoenix to try it out. It installed just fine, but when I try to run the program I just get a window saying "The program can't start because d3dx9_43.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem." Well, I tried this, but it didn't work.

1. How do I know that the same or similar thing wont occur if I buy a copy?

2. I have been very frustrated recently at more and more computer programs that I buy as hard copy to avoid the large download, only to find that once the program is installed it asks you to make additional downloads in order to use your software.. sometimes in excess of 7GB!!

Is Phoenix one of those programs that require frequent downloads of updates or 'patches' in order to use? I don't mind when the developers create updates and give you the freedom to download them... it's only when they force you to do so, or you cannot continue to use your software.

Thanks.

d3dx9_43.dll is a DirectX component. DirectX is used by most games and graphics programs on Windows. I would install the latest version.

I have not seen too many Pheonix updates. At first you will need to update Pheonix to the latest and greatest but I haven't seen too many updates.

You must know a bit about computers, huh?

But do tell me one thing. How come if my computer doesn't have DirectX, I am able to run the demo version of Heli-X sim? is it only certain software that require DirectX?

Also, how big usually are the updates on Phoenix?

Thanks for the link, I'll have a look through it now.

PS: If I read the link correctly, it says that Windows 8 comes with DirectX 11.0. Is this not the latest?

I have no idea whether your machine has DirectX on it but the error points to a problem with DirextX. You might want to email their support group but I think they are only available during Mon-Fri. If I were you I would reinstall DirectX as an administrator on your computer and then I would do the same for Pheonix. I just had similar issues with RealFlight and Windows 8.

Good Luck

Certain programs have directX updates, so their program will operate correctly.

No. Updates, when they DO occur are automatic, and FREE. New models and flying site also update automatically, and again, are free.

From the Phoenix Sim website:
Even if you have a later version of DirectX installed on your system, your DirectX 9 components may not be current, and so you should install the following update from the Microsoft Website: Update DirectX components.

You were right.

I went to my LHS on Sunday as I had arranged to test out Phoenix on their laptop. I took my own laptop running the demo version of Heli-X (which I have been learning on) to see how they compare side-by-side.

I informed the guy about the issues I had with the Phoenix demo and DirectX, and he informed me that he had the same thing until he installed the full hard-copy, which has the updated drivers included. He was nice enough to offer to install the disc on my laptop right then and there before buying anything to make sure that it would work alright on my laptop!
