Soldering station....
Just a quick poll, which soldering station is the one used the most or does it matter. Not trying to go broke but my Walmart $12 gun isn't cutting it anymore. Thanks...

Hakko . . .
.
I can easily solder 10 gauge wire with my 60 watt Hakko where a 60 watt cheapo will sputter out.
.
The difference is the ceramic element that keeps the temperature even by regulating the power to the tip.
.
A year from now you won't remember how much you paid for your Hakko, but you know you'd happily pay it again ..

I think you will like it. I have the 936 (predecessor to the 888) and really enjoy it. Heats up quick and is easy to control the temp. I would be sure to get a bunch of tips. The small chisel tips work well for the larger stuff. The pointy tip works well for the smaller stuff. If you have a Fry's near by they stock the tips.

Clean the tip regularly during use. Put a dab of solder on the tip when you are done to keep the tip fresh.

.
The Hakko should come with a nice heavy holder with a sponge. Fill the sponge holder up with water and keep wiping the tip off constantly.
.
Also, if the tip is turning blue, you've got it too hot. Remember the Hakko regulates the tip temperature so you don't need to turn it up to max heat.
.
I have the same tips I bought mine with 5 years ago.

The FX-888 now comes standard with a brass wool sponge. The Hakko is likely the best soldering station under $300. And at $90, it's a bargain.

I have the weller wesd51 and the Hakko fx888d and the Hakko is way more accurate and more power too.
But, my favorite is butane powered.

Is a heat gun too...good for heat shrink.
I hate being tethered to a wire.

I have carried a Master Appliance Butane torch/soldering iron for years in my tool box. It's a great little portable solution.
