OS GT15 airframes
Please bear with me if this subject has been answered already but I haven't had a glow or gas heli in years and am trying to convince myself to pull the trigger on the OS...

What are you using it in right now?

I'm after something flybarred and like a 1990s FAI bird (minus the hang-ups I could live without now), I'd be happy with that performance, not looking to make a 3d machine with it.

it will install fairly easily in:
  1. Whiplash Nitro
  2. Trex 700
  3. Hirobo Evo
  4. JR Vibe
  5. Raptor 90 (not the g4)
there will be more options in coming months

Thank you Carey!

Your youtube videos really got me interested in the OS...

For any of you who haven't seen this, Carey converted a Fury 55 with the GT15, this is pretty cool

don't expect the same level of performance with a 700 class machine as can be obtained with a 600

a couple of companies are working on some conversions

The good thing about our gassers
Is that we got a big engine doing a small job. By that I mean the engine mass/body is much larger than a nitro motor and it makes about the same hp as a small nitro motor.

On the other hand, the nitro motors are quite small in comparison, and they are doing a big job, in other words working really hard running high rpms to make the power that the big weedeater motor is making or more.

What ends up happening is that the Zenoah engine in comparison is running relaxed and lasts a very long time, while the little motor is running very hard and lasts a lot less time. We all know nitro motors need to be rebuilt about every couple of hundred flights, but you can expect at least 3x that much life with the zenoah gas engines.

From what I can determine by seeing other people's posts, experience and such with this new OS engine, is that its in the same league as the little nitro motors as far as durability and reliability.

A neat thing indeed and Bobby does make it look good in the video, but I'm still liking the 700 size machines with the Zenoah engines at this time.

I'm more after a 700 but could be tempted by a 600 conversion stretched to 660 to save a pound.

The sweet spot for the OS is definitely 600, has anyone tried it in a Pantera 6 yet?

Based on my running experience with the motor, I just don't think the stock fan will move enough air to keep the motor cool but I think Mr. Beech is working on something for that.

gotcha...after watching your 55 Carey and all the other videos, the temptation of trying something with that motor is killing me!

I've had a Medusa EDF40 laying around here for years that would add a few ounces, but it might solve the cooling problem...

just wondering why aren't the large gasser using an electric fan
between that and using a jewel generator thinking you could rig one up

vibration.....I can mount it next to an electric motor, but I would have to cut a hole in the canopy and aim it towards the cooling fan from 10-12 inches away if I want to keep things light and practical in a gasser.

Most of the air misses the target, but it can make enough wind to hit it if you don't mind going through a rx pack every flight

Another downside is the awesome sound it makes is impossible to tune any engine against while it is running. I'll post a video of it in the next few days...

cause adding a purpose built fan with electric motor would just add even more weight and yet more complexity...and if you consider powering it from the on board generator that would just be inefficient really...an engine powering a generator to power another "motor" to spin a fan...

other have even though about liquid cooling...but then again you go adding more weight and more stuff to go wrong.

I'm sure that someone is working on one.

Whats the problem with the OS GT15hz now?

A few have smoked, a picture was shown one day of a nicely broken in engine and the next post was not as pretty.

I purposely said smoked since the root cause of the failures appears to be unknown right now.

I don't think the color of a surface has anything to do with heat loss ability...unless your refering to exposure from light from an external source onto said surface...

...as for smoked....

sounds like to me that guys are trying to get more than what it can deliver kinda thing...wonder what August heat is gonna do for OS GT15 reviews...

Is the Freya X-spec frame size much different than the Evo? The X-spec has the carbon lowers, not sure if that would make a difference or not. Also, what else would have to be purchased to make this conversion? Currently I have an OS HZ .91 installed. Will the stock fan bolt to the GT15, will it cool it enough? What gear ratio should I be looking for with the GT15? Im basically a sport flyer, loops rolls, trying inverted and an occasional very sloppy tic toc.
Blade 130x (5)
Trex 550 V2 (18)
Shuttle ZXX
Freya Xspec (20)
