Whip gas break in questions
Got the new whiplash to the field today for a break in flight and have a few questions as this is my first gas machine.
I have a trm270 in it and have the needles set per the instructions. What is going to be the best head speed to run this thing at?
When should I expect to start using the governor for this beast. I only got one tank through it today because of time and cool down..
I expect to put another tank or two through itin the next few days..weather permitting of course.

Your going to get all kinds of answers to your question, I allways set mine up as how I'm going to fly it, in other words, if I'm going to fly it at 1800 Hs, then set it up that way, I never used a gov, while breaking in the engine, I always used throttle curves, You have to set them up any way, The thing to remember while breaking in the engine it not to load it to much at first, I just set my HS then just do some lazy 8's nice and easy on the engine, Don't just hover as your not getting the air over the engine like you will in forward flight, Enjoy, Hope this helps,, XGM/VGMJohn Crotts

So you broke it in at 1800 HS? We had it in a hover at about 1500 a little less maybe. Wind was pretty brutal today.

Low RPM is best for breakin.
1600 is good.. you can increase it after 4 tanks or so, gradually to your desired HS after 9 or 10 tanks.

Your going to get all kinds of answers to your question

I have been flying gassers for many years now, and like I said, I set my needles close, (tad rich) then set my HS to what I'm going to be flying, and go fly,, I use Lawnboy ashless mixed 3oz to a gallon of fuel for the first gallon, then I change out to Amsoil Saber Pro, mixed at 2oz to a gallon (62 to 1), Enjoy!! XGM/VGM
Low RPM is best for breakin.
Why?? you want to lug the engine around for the first several tanks,, NOT ME,, but like I said,, everyone is going to do it differant,, XGM/VGM

"everyone is going to do it different"
Definitely. While I run low rpms on mine to start, I land frequently and let the engine idle for a minute to cool down before flying again.

I also don't wait 45 minutes after the completion of the first tank to let it cool, just refuel and go up again. Take it easy on the motor for the first few tanks and gradually increase the load and head speed and land heat cycle it (while idling) less and less.

+1^ and what rbort said. I just finished breaking in my TRM 270 motor. First gallon (actually 2 gallons) on Lawn Boy Ashless mixed 32:1. Third gallon changed to synthetic oil mixed 32:1 per conversation with Al. Forth gallon mixed 40:1...pr conversation with Al (Toxic Al).

I did as rbort mentioned. 2-3 minute flight, land for one minute, then 2-3 minute flight, repeat until 2-3 tanks. Then adjust the needles a small amount and repeat the 2-3 minute with one minute rest, only increase the 2-3 to 3-4 minutes with one minute rest.

My motor has been increasing in power per 2nd - 4th tank of fuel I burn through it.

The key is to take your time, break the motor in gradually, and call Al if needed!

Thinking of getting a Gas Whip, is the TRM270 the best way to go for a engine? Will there anything else that I'll have to get with the kit?
Thanks,
Charles

Toxic Racing and BH Hanson mod Zenoah engines. The 270TT has worked well for me.

Here is some good reading on the Whip G. Other sites have some additional info and build thread.

Consider the landing gear upgrade, just like the nitro. A governor is really helpful on a gasser, a Stator Gator sensor is the easiest way to get the signal from the engine to the governor controller.
An aftermarket muffler and air filter help the power. The aftermarket mufflers are quieter than the stock Zenoah muffler. Lots of posts on mufflers and tuned pipes!

MA just released a 17 tooth pinion (7.29 ratio) to get the head speed down if you plan to run the engine fast. I only have a few flights on the 17T but it is a nice combo with a broken in 270, idle 1 is 1850 @ 13,500 engine RPM's. Idle 2 is at 1950 @ 14,200 engine rpm's.

Just like the MA nitro, it is a quality machine that flies great, but is much less expensive on fuel.
