Hi

If you are a Boeing 787 engineer, you may me looking at the Lipo vs NiCd debate a little closer.

Regards
Paul

Ps: yes, I have not seen a NiCd in a hobby shop for a while.

Airbus is still using NiCd batteries, so they are not totally out of production. But Cadmium is toxic, and best not to be used in consumer products.

The problem is that there are a lot of old NiCD's still in warehouses. RC companies and battery houses buy these for pennies and sell them to you. I assume that essentially all NiCD's are old stock now. As Red said, NiCD's are dead after 7 years whether of not they have ever been used. Shelf life or entropy kind of thing.

Most nitro guys are switching to LiFe. A123 is better than pop tarts. Some guys insist on LiPo everything. NiMH dump in voltage at about 50F, summer in some countries.

The thing about ni-cads were the memory brain fade that they had. I would venture to say that they killed a lot of RC airplanes and heli's over the years. If you didn't discharge them on some sort of capacity tester once in a while you were fliting with the earth.

LiFes make great battery packs for nitro birds. They stay charged and provide good power without resorting to really high voltages that need a regulator. You can just put a step-down prior to the tail servo if you need to.
