I was flying my 550E today and just noticed a nick on the leading edge of the blades. The is a similar nice on both blades, looks like it might have been from stones. I also cut the weeds alot with this heli. The nick is about 1/4 inch. Is there any chance of the blade failing during high loads? Has any one had a blade failure after noticing a nick or ding?

I have a 3D heli, I don't understand why it doesn't do 3D.

Blade issue
do you have a pic? also need to do a coin tap test. listen to the sound, if you hear a thud then get rid of it. but really need a pic to see.

Best,
Kevin

For me, if the damage is pretty minor on the trailing edge, no problem. Leading edge, I tend to be really picky because of the forces going into the wind. Me personally, if it is really minor, I would save them as test blades. When you need to do a test hover and may have a chance to crash due to an unknown issue. I have a set of 600mm blades that I use for that purpose.

I would be really careful if I was you, I was doing sum work on my trex 450 one day an accidently drop one of the blades an put a small chip in it on the trailing edge near the root.
I thought it would be fine so put it back on my heli and went to fly, I spooled the heli up and just about to lift off then it went BANG, the blade failed it was like the heli exploded, it looked like it had been in a bad crash and it had not even left the ground.

lesson learnt.

It was really hard to take a good pic and it is a little blury. The mark to the right is grass not a crack. In the circle you can see it. I put red ticks next to where the gel coat is spliting. After I took the picture I started to push on the crack and poped the chunks out. The bottom picture is of two seprate blades. It did not look to bad till I pushed on it. Time for new blades. This is a first for me. I have seen small nicks in Edge blades. These are mavricks and they seem more inclined to split.

Looks like you have some blades for test flights only.

They would become my test flight blades. I also would not spin them full speed either no IU2 testing just some hovering in N mode.

ENGAGE!!

I have taken them off. If I ever decide to practice autos I might start with these. Thanks for the suggestions guys. This was a new one for me. Until I pulled the cracked piece off they did not look bad at all, preflight those blades.

The damage didn't look too bad on my test blades, so I stuck a piece of tape over the damage spot. I also won't fly around with them on. I will only use them for a test hover. When spending $90-100 for a set of blades, it sucks to destroy a brand new set.
