I am now flying a trex 500. What headspeed and battery size work best for the trex 500? currently using a hacker 1350KV with a 16T pinion and a 2650mah 6s battery.

At 100% that should be around 2960, which is good on a solid motor. I use 2700mAh TP 45c's, give me about 4-4 1/2min. The non-pro version, I remember 2800-2900 is the magic h.s., the pro, 2900-3100 is great for the majority. I hear you can throw a 3300 mAh but you'll have to adjust the canopy some. It's only advice and my opinion, others may differ.

I bought a 17T pinion for it. it currently has a 16T pinion, but according to the numbers seems a bit low.

The numbers seem a bit low for a 500 esp or pro? All i do is multiply your kv x 22.2, then divide that by main gear/pinion. That will give you headspeed with a 100% optimal motor. We do know most motors run 90% efficient so subtract another 10% in the headspeed roughly. Add that extra tooth to 17, you'll make up 70% of that loss, bringing you around 2830 for the esp.

I enjoyed the Trex 500. I had a few. The newer 500 is a great bird. Turnigy 6S 3000mah packs were spot on with balance.

I ran 2900 with hard dampeners. Rock solid. 2750 for putting around and light sport.

I use darkhorse rc calculator. I had an idea of what headspeed and battery. I just wanted to hear some opinions on people who have been flying them. I installed the 17T pinion. With the calculator, I got 2831. So figure with the governor, it will be a tad lower. That seems like the neighborhood I was figuring.

Also does the pro fly much different than the ESP?

Dark Horse is my favorite, but they need some new models.
Honestly, I miss the esp, the pro is pretty swirly stock. The esp imo seemed more designed for sport flying and mild 3d. The pro is more agile, faster, and uses up a lipo alot faster. Since the tail gearing is lower (same thing they did with the 550), you gotta run a higher hs for tail authority and no wag. Kinda like going from a V6 to a V8.

Well I have it all set up and test hovers have been good. Just need to do another test hover with the new pinion and then do a real flight.
