The UAV Operator's Medal

Is it plastic or gold foil
I just want to know one thing: do you have to put your tostitos and beer down while playing the video game to earn it?

Oh, and here's the real funny. This is above the Bronze Star, which is actually earned on the battle field by a real human being....in person.....not on tv......with a real gun.......that they shoot........with live rounds.........and someone possibly shooting back.....with live rounds. For you Gamers out there that might be confused by this, think of Call of Duty, but in real life. You can actually die and resetting the console does not bring you back.

New level of stupid and dishonor by dear leader.

Shouldn't a virtual warfare award be awarded virtually? They could display it on their computer's desktop.

1/3 of all USAF aircraft are UAV, but that medal is just insane

Licensed (CASA) UAV operator certificate holder 1-YFOF5-01 www.helicamaerial.com.au

Well, especially considering this site and the interests that we all share here, I am not opposed to a UAV Operator's medal. A UAV is a tool of warfare and can be as effective in some ways as a manned aircraft in certain situations. Think of it this way. A platoon could be cutoff somewhere with no hope of escape or survival and a UAV strike is called-in, successfully executed, and the entire platoon is saved from certain death. To disregard that operation just because the pilot is in a trailer miles away seems to ignore what was actually achieved.

Now, given the fact that no neck was stuck out to save that platoon, I feel that medal should definitely be down low at "entry level".

I would hope that the military would only recognize accomplishments that are above and beyond simple targets and focus on a series of successful strikes that directly result in saved lives.

Nice way to think about it however we should not be giving out medals for doing your job. These are awarded to the special few that go above and beyond, who risked their life for the sake of others. We don't give trophies for showing up (never mind, we do that now). Is there a case where a UAV pilot could earn a medal, I believe so. What are the chances, I believe would be rare.

I think R Hudson makes a valid point.

I just think that the medal given to a UAV pilot should not supercede a medal given to someone who risked their life on a field of battle.

The nature of modern war fare has certainly evolved to a point that it preserves human life....atleast on our side.

But there's just something about an operator sitting in a cozy office on domestic soil flying a sim that takes away the valor earned in the fight.

What is the future- Who's bots are tougher?

Put a magent on the back of the medal and fix it to the side of the aircraft that did the job

I think we are ALL in agreement that it sure as heck shouldn't supercede a medal that was earned with risk to flesh & blood.

I would also hope that a medal such as this one would only be awarded in extremely rare cases.

You mean like crashing a drone on Washington DC.

Axidentally, of course.

Seriously, seems to me we have a lot more serious things to be concerned about other than some medal given out to some hacker, and/or nerd, and/or game players.

Its all make believe folks.

That makes the medal make believe.
