From my experience the latest must-have for the Real Flight simulator is a Phoenix sim.

I have felt that way from day one and have thrown away hundreds and hundreds of dollars each time I purchase Real Flight (yes, I have had the latest version). Keep in mind that I have owned pretty much every sim since 1999, starting with the CSM polygon model sim.

For airplanes, I think Real Flight is great. Maybe the best.

The helicopters still have that extremely artificial feel to them. You get this weird lag in the controls that make it feel so different from the real thing it really gets my timing off.

I don't even know how to explain how weird the pirouettes feel in Real Flight. Just 'OFF'. That is my personal experience.

If you like Phoenix, then I would HIGHLY recommend sticking to it. If you like Real Flight, then stick with that.

The physics are definitely different in each sim. You will find those who will defend each platform to no end. Ultimately it is up to you to decide which one feels the most realistic to you.

Hmm, I haven't tried to download both. If I have time I'll try tonight when I get home and I'll let you know what happens.

Ryan, you have the new version of RF that supposedly all of the pro heli pilots tweaked the physics on?

Had... tried it for two weeks or less and sold it. Just doesn't feel right to me. I liked the fact they had the Synergy helis in there, but it just feels weird to me.

I had the exact opposite opinion. Everything in Phoenix felt "floaty" and the models felt like they didn't weigh much. I never had issues with any version of RealFlight from v3.5-5.5, but version 6.5 is completely 100% changed for the better. I finally feel like the sim is a very close approximation of real life.

One thing - RF 6.5 is resource heavy. You need a mondo computer to take full advantage of it...

And by "mondo computer", what kind of specs are we talking?

I don't know about "mondo" specs. I had RF 6.5 running on the default settings at 1920x1080 on a surface pro tablet and was getting over 100fps.

I think it really depends on whether you're using a PhotoField or not. The PhotoFields require a vastly less powerful computer.

I would agree with that. I only really fly on the photo fields.

Free update no more at Phoenix
I just learned that Phoenix will no longer support updates from version 2.5 and earlier.
If you have version 2.5 or earlier don't uninstall like I did.

My version 1.05j disc shows a website for "free updates". I get error 404 when I go there. I called HH who told me that I am screwed. Free doesn't mean free to them. Do any of you know how bad version 1.05j is? It is unusable trash.

I have recommended Phoenix to over a dozen pilots and now I am betrayed. I recommend they buy Phoenix at the LHS over the years precisely because updates were/are free. I wonder if any of them has a version that will no longer be updated free?
I wonder if I have lied to those people.

Runtime Games Phoenix's makers will throw you away next. You people with version 3.0 , step right up.

I am told the problem is thievery. Paradoxically, my only recourse is to become a pirate and copy someone's 3.0 or newer software to get support today on Phoenix's website. Go figure!

But I should copy version 4.0 disc, not 3.0, to hold Runtime Games off a while longer. .

I own both and for me, RF6.5 is the clear winner in terms of flight physics. BTW, RF6.5 is LESS of a resource hog than RF5 was. For RF6.5, I would say you need a middle of the road computer with a higher end graphics card.
I also only fly on the photofields. If you use the new 3d fields in Phoenix4, it works the computer harder than RF6.5 using photofields. And I use sims for practice, not gaming.....so the photofields are fine.

I bought Phoenix when v3 came out so I could compare the two for myself. Since then, the dongle has sat on the shelf except to try any updates that come out hoping they finally fixed the physics. To date, they haven't.
