Is it possible to change the location of the mode switch from it's present default location to the long switch above the right stick in the menu. For years I have used that location on my 9Z and now my 12Z Futabas. Works great if you fly thumb and forefinger. A friend of mine that has a DX6i is thinking about buying a DX8 but he would like to move the location of the mode switch as he has a really bad left wrist (been busted up a couple of times) and has lost quite a bit of dexterioty in his left hand.

Yes it is a simple entry in the FMode Setup menu to assign FMode and Hold to any of the switches.Remember the 2 long handle switches on top are 2-way switches.

My friend and I stopped at a hobby shop yesterday and looked at a DX8, I was pretty sure the switch above the right stick was three position, but I could be wrong. Are there seperate airplane and heli versions that have differnt switch arangements?

I downloaded the manual to check the switch arrangement. While not having total switch assignability, the DX8 will allow the transfer of mode control to the Aux 2 switch, which is the long one above the right control stick. The manual also shows the Aux 2 switch to be three position. It sounds like the DX8 will do everything my friend wants and more. He was considering either the DX8 or the Futaba 8FGH, but was hoping to stay with Spectrum, since the programing would be more like his DX6i, but only if the flight mode switch could move to over the cyclic stick. With the information we've gotten from the manual, I think he has made his decision.

No.There is no more air or heli version. There is one version.
Im not sure what you mean by "switch above right stick".On the front there are 2 and both are 3-way.On the top there are 2 but the front(Rud D/R) is 3 way and the one in back on top(Hold) is a 2 way.
Dont confuse the name of the switch necessarily with its function. The function of most switches can reassigned anyway. The switch name is only a name to label the switches to identify their positions.Probably the last radio you will see this way.The DX18 has the switches simply labeled with letters.A,B,C etc.
You really kind of need to get your hands on one and flip through the menus to see how it works.
To clarify. All switches are 3 pos except the 2 on the top and in back. They are 2 pos.All 4 front switches and 2 top front are 3 way.

Don't really need to see the radio now, as I said I downloaded the manual and it shows every we needed to know. The switch in question is the one labeled Aux2 in the manual, it's the long switch located directly above the cyclic stick on the front of the transmitter. While not assignable to any switch, flight mode has four options, to be turned off or assigned to gear switch, Aux2 switch or Aux 3 switch. AuX2 was the one we needed. Sorry for the confusion, I should have described location of the switch in question better.
