I am looking to update the gyro on my Raptor 30 v2. I currently have the futabua gy240. I live in a climate that is typically colder than 40-50f during most of the year. I notice the gyro does not like it colder that around 40. It will start to drift as it gets cold. The gyro is 10 years old and has sat for the last 4 years. I don't want to depend on old equipment. Thanks Guys.

Single axis

GY 520 Futaba or Spartan DS 760. Quite often deals can be found in classifieds for these as many going FBL.

...Once upon a time there were Nitros, flybars and frequency pins...

I highly recommend the Futaba GY520. I used that gyro exclusively until I switched to the CGY750 FBL. It's a fantastic gyro. Very easy to program and small. I've never used a Spartan Quark but have never heard any bad about them.

The standard 401 works at -15 celsius without issues.
With a little scotch tape over the adjustment holes also during rain/snow.

Testing the HC3SX´s now. Did eliminate 401s from all Helis.

Might put the 401s on ebay.

I've got a GY520 on a 500 and Spartan Quarks on my other helis.
No complaints with either, both are easy to setup.

Cheers!

If I were to pick up a heli with a fly bar today, I would place a Spartan Quark on it. Don't know why, just always liked them. They work.

I would place a HC3SX on it.
Works as a tailgyro
works with 750mikrosec also
has bailout with or without paddles

can be used for flybarless later.

best investment over all.

I have Futaba 520s on my Raptor 50 & Raptor 90. Both of them work great. I have had some other gyros on them in the past but the 520s work great so I have stuck with them. They are small enough to fit in some tight spots and still perform awesome.

another vote for the Futaba 520

Although I'd bet your 240 is fine. Just let it set in the weather to get to the ambient temperature before starting off. If it's temp stable it shouldn't change too much. I'd be willing to bet there is more of a concern about a 10 yr old tail servo than the gyro. I'd suggest spending some money on a new tail servo before getting a new gyro. Don't need anything too fancy, just get yourself a reasonably fast coreless servo, say faster than .14 sec rating. I've had really good success with servos on the tail that were not rated as tail servos. Even had good results using a Hitec HS-525 (which is a 5-pole motor analog servo, not even coreless) with a 401 on a Raptor.

+1 On 520
I like the 520 with a Futaba BL251.. will give you a rock solid tail set up...and will serve you very well...

Good Luck, Stan
I would place a HC3SX on it.
This would make a great tail gyro if you planned on changing from your FB to a FBL, but if that is not in the picture, you are looking at a $250++ gyro and then add a servo.. I think a bit of overkill for this machine set up... JMHO!!!!

I put a Futaba 520 on my old 30v2 when i was flying that going from a Futaba 401 it made a world of difference on the tail. I also would recommend the 520 for sure.

Why not convert it to FBL and go with the CGY750? I just upgraded my 600N with one and so far I'm loving it.

If you do want to stay with the single axis gyro, there are quite a few good ones out there but you can't go wrong with the 520.

If it ain't broke, go fly some more!

While I initially thought the Gy-520 (have one, no longer use it since I went flybarless. Sooo thinking about it, I dont know the cost of the Gy-520, has to be less than 200 I would hope by now, the Beastx OR the Ikon will give you a great tail holding gyro, but also enable you to go flybarless in the future. (I think this is a correct statement)

Therefore, I would not spend $149 on a tail gyro, if the beastx is $200.

Although I would recommend Futaba, if you can get the same deal where you are Spartan are discounting the Quark by 50%.
