Governor works as designed, not the mechanic
Anyone else seen this type of behavior?

I have my CGY750 on my G4 90 setup to engage at 30% stick position on the throttle. It always works great. But lately it is not engaging. The right engine RPM. It goes into extreme low head speed (about 1100 RPM). It does not fall back to the throttle curve (so its not that it is not activating), it seems like it governs but at no speed. I put it on the bench and check the magnet pickup sensor and see that the CGY750 registers 96% on both magnets as they pass (two magnets epoxied into the fan).

It seems like the colder the day, the more likely this is to happen. When it is warmer it just engages, runs the head speed perfect and life is good. But days like today (-13C) it never would put it into full head speed.

I'm baffled... any ideas out there? Anyone seen this or similar?

Thanks,
-Adam

That's a new one on me. I am not sure what would be changing with air temps at 9F.

I may be overlooking something here but shouldn't just one magnet register and the other is just for balance ?

I missed that in my read. Yes, only one magent should register. Sounds like one magnet needs removed and flipped over. I would check the polarity with another magnet to start.

Looks like I am picking up both magnets. I must have flipped one over when I changed them and didn't even think about it since the pickup registered good signal off them :-) I did this "refreshing" right before the cold weather set in so both the firmware update and the temp must have been irrelevant to this.

I'm guessing that the Governor was giving up and letting my curve take over when this seemed like it was all working. Wasn't really governing I just had a decent curve setup LOL.

This is funny actually, it's always these dumb things that make me scratch my head forever.

I just removed one of the magnets and put another in (flipped over of course). But I wonder... now that the governor picks up multiple pole counts... could I have just changed to 4p in the pole setting? Seems like that would have been fine too.

Thanks gents,

Funny how the title of the thread caused myself and a few others to miss the key in the details in the description that showed the root of the problem. Since it was reading the magnets twice, the governor thought the engine was turning twice as fast as it actually was.

Good pick up Kevin.

I'm devious that way. I prefer to completely cloud the issue so there is no possible chance for a helping hand. LOL

Funny how clear it is now looking back huh? Oh well, good guys all around who are willing to take up the challenge and a couple who see the elephant in the room.

The best part for you guys would have been to see me at the flight line trying to figure this out but missing the absolutely obvious. It would have been priceless video when paired with the solution. I actually flew a tank half at about 800 RPM (apparently lol) and the other half at about 975 RPM. I kept thinking, "Man this thing flies really good even with no head speed in it. What a machine."

JediJawa,

You're not the only one who had the two magnets wrong. Just went through the same thing this weekend on a friends Trex700. (He claims old age and bad eye site on the installation). Would not govern,RPM's kept going down to 1300 rpm. Found both magnets registering 96%.

Solution: Doubled the gear ratio. Governor works perfect.

The only thing I was wondering about doubling the gear ratio was, what is the limit that in RPM that the sensor can handle? I guess you proved it's higher than we need it to be.

Yeah doubling the gear ratio would have been a great solution as well, and a lot less work than I ended up putting in. Nicely done.Futaba Factory Team
