os46 in a raptor 30?
can i put an os 46 engine in my raptor 30 when im ready for it to be more aggressive. i dont like the 50 size and have 2 90 size but i thought it would be cool to be able to fly a little harder 3d with a raptor 30 when im ready. anybody done this? maybe even put a 50 in it? suggestions please.

Huh? A 50-sized helicopter is just a 30 with a bigger motor (and extended boom, etc). About a decade ago, all there was were 30s and 60s. Those are nearly exactly today's 50s and 90s.

If you want 50-ish performance, buy one. Otherwise, I think you're trying to re-invent the wheel by attempting to put a 50 sized engine into a 30-sized frame. It's been done. They're called 50s now-a-days

I thought the Rapt or 30 was a little smaller than today's 50's.

Raptor 30 and 50 are the same frame, almost all parts interchange.

to put the 46 in your Raptor 30 you'll need to buy the 50 size motor mount. You wouldn't need to change anything else but to get the benefits you'd want to change to the 50 gears (8.5 gear) as opposed to the 30 gears (9.56 IIRC). The 46 would probably run those 550 size blades great. If you are running wood blades you'll want to keep them under 1700 RPM, since that is the redline for them.

I did exactly this with a Raptor 30 and an OS .46. The gear ratio was a bit off (the engine was prone to overspeeding, and I did not have a governor). However, if you have a governor, you might have a good time with it. The power is sufficient.

Yes, you need to change out the motor mount, as jschenck noted.

I didn't know OS had a 46 size heli motor. Are you putting an airplane motor in a heli? If so, the cooling becomes an issue.Team HeliProz - Retired

Yes - it was an OS .46 FX-H. Same vintage as the OS .32 SX-H. The carb was nothing to write home about, but the fuel consumption on the .46 (vs the OS .50 Hyper) was reasonable.

I tried it years ago and never could get it tuned. Over speed and over heating. As far as I know, these os46 engines are really airplane engines. Thunder Tiger tried to convert their good performing tt36 airplane engines to heli with a simple head change. Bad Idea. When they changed the timing, compression, carb and ringed the pistons that made them into fuel hogs for good cooling, then the new tt39 ran great on heli's.

Yes you can do this. I'd try the gearing for the 50. If it'll tune you can always program to avoid overspeeding.

Just get the the longer boom, belt ,motor mount, main gear, 10 tooth pinion, and a OS50 and muffer. The OS46 was the only option back in the day when the OS50 came it was a big improvement. Will the release of the OS55, YS56, and YS60 there are a fair amount of OS50 Hypers available. In fact I have one that I would sell with a Hatori muffler if your interested.

I might also have some of the other parts I would throw in. I was flying a Raptor until last fall.

i just purchased a raptor 30 and i thought it had a os36 but looking at it on the ad it has a tt39. now with that said, will this engine give me the climbout power i need in case of emergency? i've flown 30s with 36s in them and they were pooches and didnt have the "panic power" as i call it.I didn't say you did it...I said I was blaming you.

usually the last thing needed in a time of panic is more power, I have flown a Raptor 30 with a O.S. 32 that performed quite well and more power will typically just drive you into the ground harder. practice will make you a better pilot. a Blade Nano has no excess of power and will teach you great collective management. the O.S.46 in the R30 with any of the available gearing just never worked out very well and I tried.

I had an XCel 30 and ran a 46 in it. Worked great. Got more time than all of my 60's combined. I was running a mini-pipe and it got a little hot until I changed over to 30% (back when it was affordable) and all was good. A little finicky on the tuning side, but that was more likely due to the pipe I was running.

The OS46fxh works well with the r30 gearing, I had the 46 in a hirobo gph and it ran very well without the problems people compained about.

fwiw...

Flew a Raptor 30 v2 for several years with the TT 50.....combo worked great, able to run rich enough to not overspeed w/o a governor, and it had plenty power while being easy on the 30%....Still one of the best helis I've owned....
