The Nano Tail upgrade!
As some of you may know I work at a Hobby Shop so I have access to a lot of parts and get to try out all kinds of stuff. Yesterday I was fixing the Nano store demo and needed a new tail. We were out of the stock tails so I tried a stock length MCPX tail and WOW it is perfect! One of our customers who is a whole lot better than I am did some in store 3D and he said he could not make the tail blow out! So give it a try!

Fwiw...

+1 on this mod...Really is plug and play...Tried several different t/r blades, stock works as well as any....Actually seems to help bogging a bit, as the t/r now has a longer lever.....

now set the travel on the Elv to 135 and the Alr to 130 then the tail at 150 both ways. Activate the Expo on your pitch curves with zero expo on the expo&Elev. Then take the stock blades and trim the ends off about a 1/16 then from on the trailing edge from the end about a 1/16 to O at the route and this thing really screams. I just put a screw in the blades to keep the end in place and just help them as I trimmed them with a very good pair of scissors.I also put the travel on the pitch to 95 and there is almost no bogg at all.Jim B.

Jim, I really like the idea of using the mCPX tail on the nano! I'm a little confused about a couple things though. Help a "Newb Nanite" out!

I don't have pitch curve expo with my DX6i. Can I get a similar effect by flattening the pitch curve through the middle?

Why do you activate expo on Ail & Elev but run it at zero? Isn't that in effect null? I'm not being facetious, if there's value in this setting I'm all for trying it.

Do you have any pictures of this blade mod? It sounds like you took 1/16" off the end first, then trimmed a wedge off of the trailing edge, starting with 1/16" at the end tapering down to zero at the root. Is that right?

I bet this blade mod cranks up the head speed a bit!

BTW, you could probably do these cuts with a good sharp hobby blade and a straight edge too.

Thanks,
Rick
What the...? I didn't do anything! I was just hovering and it suddenly got a mind of its own!

I don't have my Dx6 here I loaned it out but I don't remember if there is Expo on the Pitch Curves on the 6i? Read it again I did not say to run expo on the Ali or the elev. you can run just a bit if it is to touchy for you as you did say your new. These setting are for hard 3D. The blade and tail mod is good for all. But if you set it up like this and learn to fly it,you will be ready for anything. as for cutting the blades I prefer the scissors because you make the cut on both blades at the same time. That might be harder to do with a razor? But you did understand it correctly. If you don't have expo active on the pitch curves it is not the end of the world. So keep in mind this is a very hot setup! It can be toned down by lowering the travel and adding expo but keep the rest the same.Jim B.

Thanks Jim! I'm not running any expo, but I am a novice. I still think I may try the mCPX tail, but leave the extended travels to the pros. 😄What the...? I didn't do anything! I was just hovering and it suddenly got a mind of its own!

Hey
I thought the Mcpx and Nano tail motor are the same? I know the boom is different and also the plug.

The boom is about a 1/2" longer and the plug is the same. It is a perfect fit.Jim B.

No worries...Just bend the wires at the plug like the nCPX...Works great!

I have to look at it again but yes I did have to bend it. I also remember it would not go in from the bottom like the stock one did,I had to bend it at a 90 and come in from the top. These upgrades might not be the best to attempt if your new at this.Jim B.

Below is the photos of my Nano with the MCPX tail and what the wire looks like plugged in. Also if you look you will see that I also installed a MCPX landing gear. That being said now the MCPX battery fits. All is needed is the charge adapter and your plugged in. I have not tried this yet so I will be back to report this when I do. It is dark now and will be snowing in the morning so who knows?

When running the mCPX tail, do you need the extra travel on the tail output to compensate for the longer boom? What the...? I didn't do anything! I was just hovering and it suddenly got a mind of its own!

so are you saying that the mcpx batteries work on the nano in stock configuration? It doesn't hurt the board or anything? Forgive my stupidity on this subject. I am very new to the mini/micro heli stuff
It's a complex, costly, glow powered anti-gravity machine!

they can,it is the same voltage but it is bigger and heavier. I tried it and it was ok but to heavy. but they won't fit in the stock landing gear. so the Mcpx gear did work out ok good but the battery is still in question.Jim B.

Nice mod but I 3D my nano and have never blown the tail out in stock form! The tail holds far better on this heli than it does on the MCPX.

You also mentioned not running any cyclic expo, this makes the heli VERY twitchy and would almost be unflyable for a beginner! I fly 3D and run 35% expo on the Nano! I am a thumb flyer though.
60% of the time, it works every time!

Rich: Expo is really a personal thing, no expo will make it feel twitchy if you are used to a large amount of expo but once you get used to it that will pass. several of the top 3D pilots in my area use none or even negative expo on their 3D birds. I let a fairly new guy try my Nano today with 5% expo and he was a bit shaky at first but within 2 minutes he was loving it and had me make his like mine but with 15% expo. The MCPX tail seems to do more than just hold.It seems to not work as hard and the end result seems to be less head bogg. I can't explain it but you will feel it when you try it.Jim B.
