G4 Tail Boom
I broke my fancy (and expensive) CF tail boom!

I am looking for a lower cost replacement until I get really good at flying it. Will a Raptor 90 boom fit? Is there an optional aluminum boom?

90 boom
The 90 boom will fit, it,s even a little longer.
You have to make oval slots for the plastic insert at the tail gear box.

Thanks I will give that a try.

Did anyone else notice that the stock E720 boom is really an aluminum boom with a carbon weave paint job so they can justify a high price – what a rip off!

I just took a knife to my Nitro G4 tail boom. I took off clear & carbon fiber fibers. I'm thinking the tail booms are like my high end contest 3D arrows. An aluminum shaft wrapped in carbon fiber. But in this case a very thin layer of carbon fiber, unlike my arrow shafts. By no means I'm saying you're wrong. Just saying what I can see on my own tail boom. On my Facebook. I have a Company that makes tail booms for many big name R/C helicopters makers. The tail booms they make, are aluminum carbon fiber warpped.Team JR, Thunder Tiger America, Scorpion, Skookum Robotics, Savox, RC Aerodyne, Sirocco, SpinBlades

I don’t see how that carbon wrap adds any strength and mine bent very easily. Looks to me like it just adds expense and nothing else.

Has anyone seen any aftermarket aluminum G4 booms?

Carbon fibre composite, like the align cf booms (NOT just painted cf btw). Not really any big strength advantage, just a bit lighter (which can help your CG) and looks very cool, lol!

Not a big diff in price either. The R90 Al booms are ~$30 and the G4 CF ~$50. Maybe just crash less or buy some 1" Al tube and make your own.

However, there is a big diff in price for the x50e cf booms (~$45) vs x50 titan Al (~$10) so I might consider the cheaper Al option on my x50e.

Cheers,

As noted, the stock G4 boom is absolutely real carbon wrapped. It is a bit stiffer than the plain ali one, but the ali one is a fine alternative should you choose to go that route and to reduce expense a bit.

Dr.Ben,

Since the R90 and G4 tail booms are slightly different length do I need to use a R90 3D drive shaft or does it make any difference?

There should be enough wiggle room. Tell me what the length disparity is.

If the ali boom is a fuzz long, you can shorten to match. If it's a fuzz short, then there will still be plenty of boom mount up front to safely hold the boom.

The R90 aluminum boom is about 1/2 inch longer so I will go with the R90 driveshaft. I also have a R90 so that’s good for me to stock a couple of spare booms and shafts that can be used in either helicopter.

Ben-T,

Just a reminder that you will be changing your CG doing this, be sure to compensate for it.

I have plenty of room to shift the battery further forward so that won’t be a problem.

When I get it together I will let you all know how much cg shift it takes. I might get it put together next weekend.

I got in a few flights with the R90 boom and found another advantage. The visibility is definitely improved using the R90 boom. It shows up much batter than the stock CF covered aluminum boom.

BTW cg was not a problem.
