Best way to Ignite a Lipo ??
Strange question I know. I'm in the process of making a battery bunker to store Lipo's inside. Also I am making a smoke exhaust system should one go off. But,I need a way to test it, I have some old 6 cell, 2500 MAH Lipo's but looking for a some what safe way to set one off, and catch fire. OR TELL ME, IF MY THINKING IS NOT RIGHT, in that I shouldn't have to worry about the Lipo's just stored, but only have to worry when CHARGING the lipo's. The reason for that question is, is that the LHS for instance, has Lots of Lipo's, NOT in a bunker, in their store, but all probly siting at their store voltage of about 3.8 V. per cell. If the LHS, or mail order firms are not worried about their stock of Lipo's caching fire, should I ???

I am not saying it is a good idea... but we have set off a few at the club by puncturing them with a nail stuck in the end of a 2x4. We have also set one off by over-charging using the nicad/nimih setting on a charger, although it was a much longer process and seemed much more dangerous when we did it. Battery temps were extremely high before it finally burst into flames.

Again, I am not saying these are good ideas... pretty dumb actually... but sometimes playing with fire is fun More important was finding out how the batteries reacted to punctures or over-charging.

I had a 3 cell blow up in my transmitter!! Luckily it didn't ruin the tx. Was at store V and still blew. I keep them in a metal tool box now. My things are to expensive to have a 40$ lipo cath them on fire.

Air rifle, safe at a distance, nice smoke bomb....

You can get a smoke bomb for every cell if you're a good shot.

Hi Ayes08, Yes, I agree with you, I read and sometimes post on Runryder to learn and more importantly understand something, and I have to tell you, Lipo safety is one of the most confusing subjects I have come across on Runryder. I understand why you would store Lipo's in a metal tool box and for some, a ammo box. But I have read that if you have more than one Lipo in a box, if one goes up in flames, they will ALL catch fire. And the fact, that if the box does not melt, you will have many $$$ of smoke damage if not a fire. True ? I don't know, there's just so many conflicting opinions. I also read or heard that even if the metal box does contain a fire, that the box itself will get so red hot, that any thing around it could catch fire. True ? I don't know. And as I said in my post, why do hobby shops seem to have, say, 50 or so Lipo's on their shelves or floor, and they don't seem to worry about it. Are the lipo's more dangerous after their first charge ? I don't know. I have seen maybe 50 to 75 E-Heli flyer's at different fields over time, and have seen no one use a LIPO bag. I have seen maybe 6 very experienced pilots charge packs in their home, and was told, as long as you don't leave them unattended, your OK. Don't know. Their just doesn't seem to be one set of difinitive rules for LIPO safety, more opinion or guesses than anything else. I'm thinking of switching to nitro, for safety reasons, instead of building the LIPO bunker.

Buy one of these:

Let the fun begin with the LiPo & the cannon. Just bought one, they are legit and a TON of fun. Watch some of the videos.

Put it on your kitchen table charging. Then go into town for a couple of hours. This method has been proven to work

How do you all store them. And where? I have no idea what to do with mine but reading this stuff makes me awfully paranoid. Just got a new house.

Has anyone tested the LipoBags to see what size lipo's they can contain the fire with? Can they handle a 6S 5000mah battery fire? What about an 8S?

I would like to see one of these company do this testing and post the results.

Thinking about this last time there was a lipo destroyed at the field. A jumper connector to self short that once you plug in. Just not sure how fast and what kind of pop it will make doing it this. Like seen in a APP connector test the the connector housing should melt alway but connectors get fused together.

I agree with the dead short I am also not to blame for what happens. Had to get my disclaimer in there.

I have a cheap metal tool box and store them in the top of it inside a lipo sack. I also do not have any large lipos or I might put more thought into a storage method. I just have two 450 lipos and a 2s 5000 for my slash, Mcpx, and 130x batts.

The most spectacular ones we have pulled off were done by attaching it to a long set of charge leads and charging it as if it sere a NiMh battery. When the charger hits the peak detection point all s#1t hits the fan. Fully charged - especially overcharged LiPo batteries give the best show.

PLEASE! Do this under very controlled conditions and have fun.

We kept checking the pack we over-charged with a temp gun and temps were over 800 degrees before it finally burst and went up in flames. Be extremely carefull if you go this route, I wouldn't reccomend it to anyone. Puncturing the other pack was much quicker and the pack didn't blow up like a balloon before burning up like it did when we over-charged it.

I still wouldn't reccomend catching any of them on fire using either method. It was pretty careless when we did it although we had a fire extinguisher and large open area on a gravel road. Still pretty dangerous and stupid for us to try... but sometimes we all try dumb things we shouldn't

i over charged one while trying to get it back up from 0 volts (got distracted and caught it after it was warm and puffy.)

took it out into the driveway put a nail just long enough to go through all 3 cells and pounded it in with a hammer. then kicked it out into the road.

smoked for a few seconds increasing slowly then sparks and boom flames 6 feet in either direction.

was a 25c 1600mah 3s hyperion.

a year later i put a nail in a half discharged taco'd 2200 35c 3s hyperion and it just smoked and smoldered.

if your going to pop it and want a show. charge it up as high as you dare let it get then puncture all cells and stand back.

only makes sense higher voltage means more energy to flame out.
Who cares... its just money...
