there are a number of counties across the nation that have filed for bankruptcy protection. that in itself doesn't mean much other than their liabilities greatly exceed their cash flow. bankruptcy is often used as a strategic move to force creditors to renegotiate terms that become unfavorable. certainly during the boom times of several years ago many entities (iincluding people) entered into agreements that made sense at the time, but obviously could not forsee the economic downturn that came along. san bernadino county was particularly hard hit by the decline in real estate, and the county has lost millions on local real estate taxes. basically, you can draw concentric circles around los angeles that are evenly spaced by 10 miles, and as you move further away from center, the greater the hit to the economy. we do not have suburbs, as are common in other states, cities are essentially contiguous. san bernandino was at one time a promise of affordable housing fcr residents working in or near LA, but the real estate collapse left the county with extremely depressed housing prices. other states have suffered the same result.

i would suggest some level of objectivity in any analysis, not quoting from politically energized websites when seeking a particular view, but rather from sites that collect data that have no politiical affiliations.

I am still not getting the answers to my original question. Who the hell in their right mind would lend any money to any city in the State of California? The Liberal Progressive totally dominate the politics in California.

The debt is real in California from approx 150B to over 350B. I do not post lies or smoke and mirrors. If I am wrong and the data is wrong, then I will be the first one to admit it. Remember, Paul Volker is running the budget numbers and he has come up with those ginormous debt numbers for the state. States are not allowed to print money or monetize any debt like the Feds can.

Where is the money coming from, last I check people are leaving California is droves to other states. Business are leaving in droves to other locations. Arizona is picking up quite a few California based business.

Question once again, who the hell is financing California's debt?

So they keep raising more taxes and they are able to collect more money in the billions to pay for their debt? Are people that deluded in their own state? Last I checked, If I was an illegal, first place I would stop would be in California. Illegal and social programs costs the State BILLIONS of dollars.

Arizona had a deficit and we had some serious budget issues, but we least tackled most of it. Yes, we had to do some incredible stupid things to get the deficit balanced. How are other States allowed to continue the ginormous deficits?

It's all on paper, just paper.

Just like the Fed is running the machine full tilt to print bucks, the same holds true with how California keeps the lights on.

An illegal can get his California welfare check in the mail and go cash it.....just add it to the IOU on paper. No problems.

Who do you think is first in line for pork spending and federal cash? Wonder why Pelosi is so popular and keeps heading back to DC? Same reason why California has so much representation in Congress and the electoral college. They have more pigs feeding at the Federal trough than anyone else.

Fiscally responsible states end up paying for California's debt. And the rest is propped up with state revenue gimmmicks.

Nothing's real

I think that we need a law that states that no one can move from Cal, until their debt is paid down. We don't need their freeloaders moving to our states when the well runs dry!

We can spend 63 billion and build a high speed rail from nowhere to nowhere else.Thats the solution.

There is no money. We are gonna use IOUs.Thats been perfectly adequate for the last 100 years. Why should it be any different now? We all know that if you keep doing the same thing over and over eventually you will stumble upon a new result.Right?

Informed lenders with lots of cash.

California is not just a state and in reality, it is a corporation. As well as citys and counties. Hint_CAFR. No States are broke. In Fact California has always had 100s of billions in surplus. Every state is invested heavily in Stocks, Bonds and 1000s of "off-the-book" investment practice's called the "general fixed-asset account. You don't see these figures in annual finance reports.
