TT MD500 on raptor Build. NEED HELP with strut wholes in body. My kit has no markings for placement.
Hello all,

After a couple years off of flying I decided to get back into it, and finish some unfinished projects. On the top of the list is to install this camo TTMD500 body collecting dust, onto my raptor 70 with the 90 tailboom kit.
I've run into a problem. Step 9 of the manual says that there are impressions on the bottom of the canopy where I am suppose to trim away to fit the rubber grommets around and slide the struts through. But...of course I seem to have gotten the Kit which does not have any markings at all that shows where to trim or evern begin.

Can anyone that has done this build, send some help my way? Tips, pictures, and especially measurments would be great..the know how, so that I can make sure I am placing these holes and the struts in the correct positions before I cut.

I would REALLY appeciated it.

Sincerely,
Christopher

I had this kit a couple years ago. If I remember correctly, the LG struts tie into the slots in the wood kit. So, if you can't figure out where to cut the holes, you may need to make a 1/2 strut template out of wood and fit it to the interior wood kit. Then you can trace around it and open the holes in the fuse until the actual struts fit.

I may be confused here, but there is no wood kit. This is the Thunder Tiger MD500 defender body being fit onto a Raptor 70.

My TT MD500 had a wood platform bonded into the fuse that supports the mechanics. That's the wood kit that I'm referring to. Unless you have some oddball kit, yours should have the same platform.

I know this might sound like you don't know what you're doing but there must be an outline on the outside of the body at or very near what would be the spots they show for the hole openings for the landing gear struts to go through. Also, check the body on the inside. If you can't find it there, the next thing you will need to do is get a centreline drawn on the body from which to do measurements from. You can use a laser line tool which can save you a lot of time but fine pinstripe tape can do the same for you. Remember that the holes are for the gear to come through and are not used to support the body in any way but are only used to position the body in relation to the chassis. See if the two screw holes are already drilled for the upper body mounting. That can help you get a start on where to begin putting reference lines for the gear.

If you get the main mechanics mounted in the body, less the gear, you can use the positions of the gear mounts on the bottome of the chassis to help you get your first lines for the gear holes. It is a lot of work but if those marks have become faded with thousands of mold pulls, you need to start this way to get those positions laid out. In the long run, the finished product will be nice in the air. Hope this helps.

My mistake, but I could have sworn that my MD500 had a wood kit in it. I have had so many scale kits that maybe I'm just having a brain fart Forgive the old man...

Yes there are diffenately no mold marks , I've had others more experienced then me look. I was also thinking of fitting the mechanics in first , but with the arc of the struts it's going to be a pain to measure out

I just checked and YES you are right, I had the MD530 and that one does have a wood kit. So, the old man isn't as crazy as I thought... Good luck with your build.

There are no mold lines, nor any wood. I used the struts and made a temporary wood base plate. Then you can fit that into the fuse to see approx where the struts go. Make small holes and then enlarge them.If you skip me I can't play!

Measurements would be awesome, maybe use the corners of the center whole as a starting point. Also, what are the 4 small holes on the bottom for? These are unmarked as well. The body just came with the window moldes and outlines, as well as the bottom center hole already cut out.

Looks like another unwritten instruction. Those are to get at the screws that hold your landing gear to the chassis as you install the gear and leave them in the body. You should be able to use socket head screws (Allen key) so inserting them is not a PITA. Hope this helps.

Here is a pic of some measurements off the center line of the fuse . they are close , but not exact . but it should get you in the ball park . I took a measurement off the rear body line in the fuse as a starting point for how far forward to start the rear landing gear.

If it may help I still have the assembly manual I could e-mail to you .
