Looking to build a gasser need advice on what to buy
I am looking to build a gasser. I have a Trex-550 and a 450. I have minimal nitro experience and zero gasser experience. I am looking for suggestion on what to purchase. The only heli's I know of are the whiplash and the Century helicopters. I can sport fly now and plan on doing some mild 3D. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  1. MA, Century and Bergen all make "ready for gas" models
  2. Helibug and Century also make conversions for Trex models and Helibug also makes them for 4-5 other brands as well
  3. JR has a big gas model, the GSR260Z - its pretty neat
  4. Vario has two models
  5. There are some up and coming models and conversions as well, TSA and Helixheli being two of them
THIS post might help

There is a bunch more info

HERE

I find the sticky index very helpful.

Having tried a few, I am really enjoying the Whiplash.

The only heli's I know of are the whiplash and the Century helicopters.
and theres a reason for that

IMHO I would go with somthing you can find local knowledgeable support for, like people at your field (if they fly gassers and actually know what they are doing)...

...read up on the top helis in gasoline, read the reviews good and bad and ask around, just make sure to set your "sponsored" filter on high too. Then review your buget and make the jump...
showing a preference will only get you into trouble, 90% of everything is crap...

You are in luck as you live in MA. Raja is in MA and you are not that far away from him. He fly's all the time even in winter. He has had experience with all the brands of gas helicopters. I would PM him and go watch him fly sometime and see what a gasser can do in person being flown by an expert in his field. Not just an expert flier but knows all the brands inside and out. He is a great heli mechanic and really is amazing at tuning them in to perfection. Do read all you can but if you hook up with Raja in person you will see what a gasser can really do. I wouldn't recommend doing your first gasser alone especially if you have little to no Internal Combustion heli experience.
Raja is a great pilot and all his gassers run and fly like a swiss watch.
Setup is everything, All my heli's can fly far better than I can pilot them

As I am not affiliated with any manufacturer and have set up and built lots of gas helis, go Whiplash if its in your budget. No unecessary upgrades needed, built in quality. Your lucky to have Raja in your state. One mile of road will take you one mile. One mile of runway will take you anywhere in the world.

I have Radicals and like them. I'm not into 3D, just wanted a cheap to fly, low accessory helicopter to take out and fly. Raja also builds generators that will make a charger less likely to be used most of the time. Just your heli, transmitter and gas. I'd also include a battery checker just to be safe. Century is also only minutes away so makes parts easy to get. There are other brands though, that Whiplash looks nice. Good luck and hope all goes well. Raja seems like a nice guy and very knowledgable. He was a great guy to deal with when I got my generators from him.

I bought a Radikal G20 hd for 199 on black friday. As of the other night, they still had one or two of the HD G10 versions on sale for that same price. The savings bought all of my servos for it a couple weeks ago. Just a heads up. Haven't started the build yet.

I guess they had a batch for Black Friday and they kept them at that price until those set-asides all sold. I think there's a couple still left for 199. The bummer is I went to get their HWC-20 engine combo which is supposedly quite good...and they're out of stock for 40-45 days....GRRRRRR!!!!
My servos get here tomorrow, I already have a mini-G set aside for it, I bought a metal head for it, so I'm there other than the motor. Looking forward to it a LOT!!!

Thank you Raja and Adam. I may take you up on the offer. I work the typical 9-5 week but the weekends are always open

fla heli boy where are you buying this stuff so cheap?

I was looking at a Whiplash because of the good reviews I have seen. As far as tuning the engine, is it really that difficult to tune? I keep reading about how it is of great importance to tune the engine which I realize but aren't the motors just small juiced up weed whacker motors? I apologize if I offend anyone it's not my intent....

got the Radikal at Heli-World.com I think they still have 1 or 2 in stock. The HD G10 version. You have to look, because they sell like 6 variants, but I believe it's still there for 199. Couldn't turn that down.
The metal head I got used on the classifieds here. Perfect condition for 60 bucks. I may start with the stock head and see how it goes. Main reason I bought the metal head was because it will take standard 50 blades. Eventually I want to go FBL, but I'll do that after I get it sorted out and the engine broken in properly.

Yes they are essentially "weed wacker" engines.
If you are familiar with small 2 strokes, it will be easier for you than someone that has not tuned a carb before.

The hardest part is you have to land, adjust and take back off to hear if you are lean/rich, plus there a few other things unique to helis that will give you indicators if it is not set correctly.

If an experienced pilot can show a new pilot how to set the carb, it is much easier.

Raja was nice enough to show me his machines this afternoon. I am really impressed with the Whiplash as well as the other MA heli's he owns. Great quality. I'm really leaning towards the Whiplash. My luck hasn't been the best with the electrics and I want a gasser. If anyone is interested I took a video clip of Raja flying the heli. I'd like to thank Raja for taking me out and answering my questions. I apologize for the poor quality. I do not shoot too many videos.
