Can't see how a buddy box will help much with hovering.
You will not have enough time to recover if something happens.

I would put training gear on it a let him bounce around.

Thanks, TheWoodCrafter

either my trex 500 or Goblin... and I would have plenty of time to react to a hover mistake

ShuRugal is referring to your blatant misuse of the apostrophe.

You can look for a used 7C and buy the trainer cord (must buy one that allows diff in voltage). You can also use the 7C for the sim.

A straight 4 channel dumb box.

It does not care what voltage is going in.
Just set all the 5 primary channels to FUNCT for the 8fg and it will work like a charm.
The only drawback is that the throttle stick may need the trim to reach the max and min throttle/pitch. Not an issue when training.

BWT, I do teach and buddy box often 1st time beginners. Just give good instructions including bail out/recovery before you begin (center the cyclic + add a bit of collective). Plus you have to fly the sticks constantly while holding the switch.

Does the slave radio need to have all the heli programming setup the same as the master??

Not at all.

For all Futabas, in the Trainer Menu, select the channels you want, and set them to FUNCT. You can also select if you want to train with all channels or selected ones. The master holds all the programing, and you only use the sticks/trims from the slave.
For Helis make sure you select 1-2-3-4 and 6

For the slave box, you only need to make sure the servo direction os correct through its reversing, and the trims are at zero.

I have flown my Raptor 50X with Helicomand FBL using the trainer box in the picture and it does quite well.

Needless to say, when you train helis with a buddy box, the instructor must fly the heli all the time the student is in control (while holding the slave switch), otherwise you'll never rescue in time.
