Mark,

Have you contacted any local law enforcement, or the FBI? At this point I would expect some type of law enforcement to be involved. Even if they say "we cannot help you", at least it would have been brought before the correct law enforcements attention.

What the person or persons doing this doesn't understand is that this is effecting everyone that is a part of this community. Mark might be the individual who provides the place for us to meet and share, but we the people are who this has an effect on also.

Thanks,
Chris

So this is software that has been distributed to 1000's of PC (without the owners knowing it) and is being controlled by one person?

And from time to time that one person sends out a request/order to all those PC to go visit RR all at the same time?
You sound as if you have some disbelief in your post.

DDoS attacks actually DO work like that. There are millions of unprotected computers out there on the internet world-wide. Take a look around at all the PC anti-virus software for sale out there. Then stroll on over to one of those vendor's sites and take a look at their virus databases to see what's been discovered over the years.

If you want to look at some very sophisticated, "in the news" virus stuff -- look up the "Stuxnet" virus.

Simply type "DDOS" or "Denial of Service" into your favorite web browser. You will learn a lot.

NO........

I am just asking for clarification.
I wasn't sure I understood what was going on here.

I am just amazed at some of the sh!T people go through and come up with just because they can.

So does anyone know how or can explain how hardware can fix this?

Thanks, TheWoodCrafter

Is that what is happening here?
Anybody know how a piece of hardware negates this?
It sounds like it would be software issue, but I guess not.
yep, that's why many of the virus's are written. To run jobs on your computer without your knowledge or consent. One person can the go run a job that sends the signal to all those zombie computers to wake up and yell a little bit at RR servers.

The "Hardware solution" is specialized to run the software that will detect and mitigate these attacks with minimal performance overhead. That is what your cable modem router does also. It's specific hardware that runs software to manage your network traffic, hopefully without slowing it down much in the process.

Firewalls are similar. You can run an dedicated hardware based firewall solution (Cisco ASA, ect..). You can run a host based firewall solution (think Symantec, ect..) - The more layers you have the better chances you have to keep the bad guys out. but those layers cost in money and performance.

If you go back a page and follow the link Mark Ryder provided, it was a very detailed explaination and what was involved with the solution for it.

Which is worse, ignorance or apathy? I don't know and I don't care!

The fans at HF were waxing romantic about RR's troubles, http://www.helifreak.com/showthread.php?t=195762
Just in case you missed it -- your "link" about people waxing nostalgic (romantic???) happens to be to a thread over there that is almost three years old...

But my question is: Why?

What good does this malicious action serve?

I can understand attacking a major financial website. I can understanding attacking a political website. I can understanding attacking a government or military website.

But why RunRyder?

At least Mark allows HF threads in off topics without closing or otherwise censoring them.

HF just closes RR topics in there off topic section after posting comments like this :

Skiddz:
RunRyder's operational status is of no concern to HF. I'm sure Mark will have whatever is "broken" rectified in due time...

Why?
There are a lot of people in the world who are just plain irrational. In this day and age, it only takes one nutbar to do major damage to a person, a business, or an institution.

From what I have read on here some of us could be on this zombie network an not even know it. I have Norton as my protection with my ips and I run system mechanic once a week. Just wondering how many of us on here are infected?

Good luck trying to stop a DDOS, the only fix (even then its no real fix)is big bandwidth and anycast, but that = $$$$$$.00. I just hope it never happens to any of my websites.
Wonder if its got anything to do with the hack that happened here several months back? Perhaps the person who did that, has done this, so maybe look back and try and work out who it was, and why they got so annoyed.

Warning...This hobby is very addictive and may damage your wealth

Looks like things have died down and the site is accessible. Yee Haaw

I must have missed this somewhere but can't you purchase protection through your hosting company? On one of the sites I maintain we had similar issues and we purchased the hosting companies 'prevention service' for $999.00 extra a month. It is a little pricey but it keeps the low lifes away and allows us to do development work and not waste time chasing IP addresses down etc.

Good luck catching the person/people involved.

I was aware the HF thread was old, does history repeat this time?

There are clues to found in the old stuff, and some individuals really are ill. No hobbyist should have to deal with them but this is the world we live in, we have to accept it and get around the inconvenience asap.

MR Macha is not all there, he needs to heal and go forward.

Beware this doesn't happen before every heli event.
