Really? What is the point of keeping Mark from going to a funfly? Why would that matter?

It's not a fun fly but more of a business trip for guys like Mark and Will.

Also, his video coverage of the events are great sales tools.
There's no real competition...if he's there that is.

I literally never use the word literally right.

DDOS is very evil, for sure.

But as for speculating on who might be behind it and why, the usual rule should apply: If you have the data, believe it; but if you can't share the data, don't insinuate it.

oops, bounced it!

There is a thing call hate and another call ENVY
Dont think twice about these sect, there're some
dangerous set of folks around these days. Its could
be another competitor that is looking for glory by
trying to drive the vendor on here in their direction.

Mark i dont understand how could you run a successful forum
with no iron certain protection of a really good ISP?.
You're seriously open up for extortionist.

there are a few different types of DoS Attacks

1. Ping flood = this type of attack uses ICMP which is apart of the TCP/IP protocol suite to flood the victim with packets.

2. Smurf Attack = where a attacker broadcasts ping requests to all computers on the network but changes the address from which they came.
commonly called (Spoofing).

3. SYN Flood Attack = takes advantage of the procedures for initiating a session. This applies to all of us when we call run ryder up our pc's send a SYN to the server and wait for the server to send a SYN + ACK, then the server waits for the Ack (acknowledge) back from the pc. This is called a 3-way Handshake.

4. DDoS = Distributed Denial of Service Attack like mentioned earlier this requires resources. This uses hundreds or thousands of zombie computers to form a botnet to flood the server with requests. It also makes it virtually impossible to identify and block the source. Most attacks are this type.

There are ways to look at Traffic through the use of Wire Shark but that is a big load of traffic to browse.

Network Security is a really big need these days nothing is really secure.

No I'm good. Well you did just give me permission but I'm not using my experience to get in trouble. Besides you know this takes resources, and I like my internet can't have Comcast not selling me internet because i was stupid.

the POS lowlife has again backed off, but getting on and staying on
pretty darn good today. Last night, could not even stay on for a few minutes (or less) at a time.

Anyway, thank you for this site and all you do, and very sorry ya had to give up your plane tickets and a great event like OHB, because of this total crap!!

Yes but 10+ years running this is a first. I will adapt and come out of this more determined to provide A (even) Better Connection.

Level3 (top tear) is my provider which provides RR lighting fast connectivity directly plugged into the Internet. This cuts both ways because they do NOT provide any kind of sheltered environment. It's my responsibility to solve the problem. I will order new equipment and put this issue to rest.

As far as the perpetrator is concerned, I hope they didn't do a deal with the devil. Sorry for the nuanced comment.

If I were in your shoes I'd look at purchasing some off lease used equipment. You can usually get enterprise class equipment like IPS systems for pennies on the dollar and 2 year old equipment is still great stuff in most cases. There are several vendors out there who buy truckloads of equipment from very large companies coming off lease and resell that equipment. I've even purchased equipment that was 1 year old coming off a short term project from companies like GM or some of the big financial institutions that just as soon roll it back out the door.

something to consider before spending 100 large on a 1U box + 20%/yr. in maintenance cost

Unfortunately I doubt it, there was an article by a security company last week, to hire russian hackers for a DDos attack is less than 200 dollars for a week, target being down for one month about 1200 dollars.

Hire whole botnet yourself with 2000 computers is about 200 dollars.

It sucks but there will always be people trying to make money on the wrong thing.
