Sorry for the inconvenience but this is a new ball game. Tuesday 12/04/12 was the first time RR experienced a DDoS attack in 10+ years of running.

DDoS changes everything requiring a completely new defense solution.

Mitigating a (sophisticated) distributed denial-of-service attack requires highly specialized software/hardware. The computational power needed is enormous. Existing firewall solutions (pre-ddos) offer no defense. For speeds sake RR is plugged directly into the Internet without any ISP support for this new DDoS problem. I am in the process of ordering new DDoS hardware (hyper expensive) to place in front of RR's existing firewall. There are immediate cloud based solutions starting at $5000 a month with unacceptable long term commitments.

Is this form of attack not prosecutable? Just curious.

Build it, fly it, crash it. Repeat as often as needed.

The nature of DDoS is very insidious. The attackers (for hire) remain anonymous commanding armies of zombie computers.

RR has not received any direct extortion inquiries, thus nothing for the authorities to investigate. The timing of this attack is obvious.

Lots of times what spammers/attackers do is place their equipment in countries where there are no laws against this sort of thing. There's a well known torrent site that actually entertained putting their servers in drones floating above the earth so they were able to circumvent any laws.

Sounds like something good to use as targets for the military to practice with. If you hit one no harm no foul. No laws to prevent it.

I'm kidding of course.

HF has had, and is having zero problems. They most likely represent the source of the problem.

I not want to speculate, but the timing is obvious (orlando ff) and the stakes are high. Someone wants to stop the way RR runs its business.

Hey Mark, sounds suspicious in that it can be a method to drive sales of the "UPgrADE", another backhanded way to bolster new product and force obsolescence of old product.

Unfortunate but "Freedom" can backfire too.

Why weren't other heli/hobby sites hit simultaneously? One might ask.

The info you provided, link, is good to know, thanks.
