I have a radikal g20 with a stock zenoah g20ei engine. is it normal for the engine to backfire while cranking top start? this is my first electronic ignition engine

The engine shouldnt back fire - it's worth checking your ignition timing especially if youve got the two piece fan unit (alloy hub and Plstic fan- I know from experience!

My gasser might not be light but it can fly better than I can fly it

It is NOT normal...
If your are trying for the first time, the fan was installed incorrect.

Check magnet related to crankshaft...
Should be at 10 o´clock...

If your engine is doing this recently, Check spark plug...

I haven't noticed it till recently. I bought the Heli used flew it a few times the decided to rekit the mechanics because I didn't like how it was assembled but didn't touch the engine. I can't see how the ign timing can be off because the fan hub is keyed on the crank shaft and the holes for the magnets are predrilled. I'll change the spark plug and see if it remedies the problem. the engine runs fine when it starts

If the spark plug does not fix it, check the battery voltage feeding coil. I know mine has backfired a few times when battery gets low.

Dx7 With Ion Power Supply. Why use anything else.

Pete, the plug is all black with a lot of carbon. I cleaned the plug and reset the gap.i haven't flown the Heli much and got it used so the plug condition isn't from me. I use the penzoil marine synthetic mixed with at least 89octane at 40:1. so as I fly it more all that carbon will clear out slowly. I changed the ign to the rcexl unit.(i got it over the summer and just decided to use it. the stock unit still works ill just use it as a back up)as for the needle settings 1.25 on low and 1.5 on high but I'm playing around with the settings. what do you guys have your needles set at? unfortunately it's been raining for days here so I haven't been able to fly.

Zenoah motor with 40:1 ratio ???... opps...

spark plug... check
Timing...check
CDI... something is wrong

Put Zenoah stock CDI... rcexl unit sits the bench!!!

i replaced the cdi with the rcexl and no problems. i did check the timing and its in spec. replaced the plug and made sure the gap was correct. now if i can tune the carb and set up the gy701 hopefully i'll be set.

My settings (yours will vary and Im only 33ft above sea level)

>Plug gap for the Rcexcel CDI @ .024in

>LOW needle is open ONE full turn minus 1/16 or 1/8 as it does not take much to notice a difference on this needle (started at 1 and 1/8th)

>HIGH needle remains at 1.5

>3.2oz to ONE gallon (40:1) of 87 octane (quicksilver marine outboard) Started with 5.1oz (25:1) when breaking in at bench with a prop.

>Most stay 4oz (32:1) per one gallon

>spinning 620's @ Nrm=1850 Idle1=2000 Idle2=GOV OFF/Tx throtle curve (<1000) using GV-1

>TWO 11 minute flights per tank (longer when kept @ 1850rpm)

>NO carbon build up (since 40:1)

>Temps below 280F taken between second and third fin immediately after landing and flying at 2000rpm

Your ears will be your best buddy after a while

Looking forward to trying a bored out 257 carb on the stock G20.

"bored" 257 on the 20cc
there is so much info, I was confused, so I have PM'ed Bill today to clear it up, and he said the stock 257 is better on the 20, even if it's a modified engine, so don't bore it

the bored 257 is for the larger engine like the 26 and 29cc
