Original GoPro for shooting me flying at the field
Hello,

I was thinking of purchasing the original GoPro camera with head band to film me flying. I realize there are newer versions but the original is only 129.00. Would this be a good choice?

TIA,
Andy

Yes Andy. The original GoPro with Helmet Cam mount will work great.

Here is a video I made wearing the mount traveling through Hollywood.

That's awesome. Thank you.

I have a few questions.

Is there some way to see what you are recording or do I have to record and then move it to my PC?

I noticed some type of curvature on the picture. Is that a special lens?
Sorry, I do not know too much about cameras?

Thx,
Andy

All relevant questions.

The GoPro by itself has nö feature to view what you are seeing. It requires a PC to view. That said, GoPro markets a backpack attachment which will allow viewing. Sold seperately of course.

The lens causes a Fish-Eye effect. A bubbled lens, which encompasses a 180 degree lens. Sunnex makes a speciality lens which will eliminate this viewing effect.

NOTE: If you replace the lens, it voids the GoPro warranty as it is not a GoPro product.

Hope this helps.

I have one more question in regards to a memory card. How much recording time do you get using an 8 Gig card?

8 gig is perfect. You have over an hour of continuous filming. 4 gig gives me 55 minutes.

No worries.

Thx again. I am going to go pick one up. I need to film myself flying as a reality check. I am getting pretty good on the sim but at the field it's a different story. I do not want to risk crashing. Yet anyways....

Funny. Whenever I go filming with my helis, I always record the entire event with a GoPro helmet camera. I do this just in case there is an issue. I will have everything on record. If it goes without a hitch, record is deleted. Been doing that for years.

I find you can never be to careful, especially when it's hearsay.

I used to have a samsung sports camera (link below) which an ex-friend ran over with his car. I like dune buggies and would use it to record me riding the buggy. The only thing I'm afraid of is that I cannot see if the camera (GoPro) is situated correctly on me head without some type of viewer.

AerialSkyCam, is that video shot with the stock GoPro lens? The fish eye doesn't look to bad. I am thinking about getting the GoPro hero 3. I like the features it has and video quality. Thanks. Chuck

As far as quality, same as my video.

You have the optional interval shots at every 2, 5, or 10 seconds. Just press the 2 second shot and forget about it. Ride around / fly around for 10 minutes and you'll have some couple hundred pictures. I forgot about it once and had around 900 pictures.
