Battery Newb - Need a little help.
So I have a nice new Trex 550e. I've spent the last week or two setting it up and getting it perfect. Only problem is that I'm a bit of a newb when it comes to this... My previous bird was a Blade CP Pro so I would just charge the little lipo and go. Easy peasy. However, now I have to deal with computerized chargers and pay a little more attention. I only bought one battery just to get started, and I have a 6s 5000 mah 30c battery. Using my Turnigy 200W charger, I've tried charging it... but I keep getting a cell error. My battery is a 6s, but the when I come to the battery check portion of charging, the charger is only reading 5s (both on a balance charge or just a straight charge without the balance), so I get an error because I have it set to 6s. Any ideas why that may happen on a brand new battery? Is there any way to fix it or do I need a new batt?

Are you saying that you have a very low cell? If it is too low for the charger to charge it on lipo, you can set the charger to NiMH and bring the low cell up. Just charge it a minute or so at a time and read the cells.Bill Whittaker

Thanks Wrongler. I gave that a shot. Charged it for about 5min at .5A. The voltage reading is a big fat goose-egg - 0.0v. Should I presume this is a connection issue and maybe return the battery (if I can)?

Sounds like you have a broken lead on your balancing connector. Take a close look at the connector and make sure one of the pins is not pushed back or the wire is broken.

Never unplug this connector by pulling on the wire. grab the shell of the connector and pull it out that way.
If it ain't broke, go fly some more!

If you can return I would. If not try charging it longer, also check the balance wires and make sure they are all connected on lipo and plug.Bill Whittaker

The advice to return is good. the advice to charge longer, or to set charger to NiMH and trickle charge it is bad! We just had another thread as to why lipos burn houses and what are the causes.. ost of the time its human error, now advice to an admitted newcomer is to charge it longer or set charger to NiMH and bring the cell up? This person admitteed he is new to this hobby and is asking for sound advice. The best thing you ca do my friend is return the lipo, dont try to repair it , dont try to slow charge it.. return it. Alot of people have had issues when it comes to HK lipos arriving with a bad cell ect. just return the lipo for a replacement."R.I.P Roman" Citizen 0094 in the Nation

Returning the battery and getting a new one is the safest bet. If you have the same problem with the new battery, then the problem is the charger. These batteries are too dangerous to try fiddling around with.

You could try to go down to your LHS and see if they have a charger so you can test your battery or maybe a friend.

Thanks, Gents. HK actually just credited me for the battery so I have a new one en route. They didn't even want the bad one back... so now.... what should I do with this bad one? I don't really want to risk using it. I presume a normal battery recycling bin would work? Should I discharge it as much as possible first?

Go to lowes or Home Depot get a MR16 50w light bulb and connect the 2 pin bolts to the battery. It will take 10 to 20 mins to have that battery totally dry. Depending how many volts the pack has.
Then take it to best buy, they have a recycle bin on the front door.

The bulb will get really hot use a porcelain plate to sit the bulb and the pack.

DO NOT touch the bulb it is an halogen bulb.

LiPo batteries, do not need to be / cannot, be recycled. Once properly discharged, cover both the positive and negative terminals with electrical tape, and then can be disposed off in the regular trash.

This is the ThunderPower reccomendation:

If you can, clip off the main wires one shorter than the other to avoid contact with one another, then fill a bucket with water, enoough to cover the lipo and mix in salt, place the lipo in the solution and let soak for a few days, remove the lipo and dispose of it."R.I.P Roman" Citizen 0094 in the Nation
