Some Numbers
Let's look at some numbers.

Electoral College votes and percent of popular vote

2012
Obama = 332 / 50.34%
Romney = 206 / 48.07%
2.27% advantage Obama

2008
Obama = 365 / 52.87%
McCain = 173 / 45.60%
7.27% advantage Obama

2004
Bush = 286 / 50.23%
Kerry = 251 / 48.27%
1.96% advantage Bush

2000
Bush = 271 / 47.87%
Gore = 266 / 48.38%
0.51% advantage GORE

So the Right was all over Bush having a "mandate" and winning by landslides, yet his electoral college margin and popular vote margins are far lower than Obama, who according to Fox News "squeaked" into office and of course, there is no "mandate".

Looking at it one more way, Obama averaged 348.5 Electoral votes and 51.61% of the popular vote in his two elections.

Bush averaged 278.5 electoral votes and 49.05% of the popular vote.

But according to the Right, Bush had the mandate and Obama doesn't.

The never ending hypocrisy of the Right.

Hey, nice numbers.

How about some more numbers.

$16 Trillion debt turning into $20 Trillion.

But of course you enjoy Obama's success at destorying this country, so those numbers don't scare you.

He pledged to cut our deficit in half his first term and then proceeded to flush our ecomony down the toilet.

Yes, because Obama is the first President to increase the debt and whatever.

Look at this graph, the debt has been on a huge rise since, oh, about the time GW came into office. Recall, he's the guy who took a surplus and turned it into a deficit. Heck of a job Georgie!!

But thanks for hijacking the thread with the very first post. My reason for posting this was to speak to the point about relative election results and the hypocrisy of saying Bush had a "mandate" and yet Obama does not. Care to respond to that point, or will you just endlessly harp on the debt, which you clearly do not understand at all.

Oh, and one more thing Dumbertsimplestein, the debt and the deficit are two different things.

Mandate or not, I am having too much fun thinking of Rove spending well over $300 million for very little return on the investment. Must be a tough week at the old crossroads HQ's.

The right has to do their meltdown/lash out thing now, I just figured this was part of it.

I usually just say the debt has been on the rise since Reagan... Bubba was a bump in the road.

One mistake about balanced budget during Clinton years. Clinton borrowed from SS to cover the deficit under the illusions of balanced budget. Sorry buddy, you got called on that one.

I hope you are ready for some chaos in the near future.

Frankly, do not care that Obama has won a second term. You democrats got your hands full, you folks got a war on your hands trying to fix the oncoming chaos. It is going to be interesting to watch how you will be able to fix things while your backs are turned against principles

Couple of points...

1. We were at war when Regan was in office. It may not have been a shooting war, but a good deal of the spending at that time contributed to the fall of the Soviet Union. We won that one (at least temporarily) and that contributed to the boom that followed. Regan was also hampered by a Democrat congress, and it wasn't until the Republicans took over the congress that Clinton moved to the center and 'balanced' the budget.

2. I don't remember much being said about Bush having a "mandate"... I do remember a lot of folks going on about how he 'stole' the election.

3. Why do you (Dems-Liberals) always insist that conservatives liked Bush and approved of his policies? Many of us didn't and were vocal about it at the time. Bush was NOT a conservative, and didn't act like one. McCain was not a conservative, and neither is Romney.

2-3% is within the 'margin of error' for most polls, and I have no illusions that the government is capable of bettering those figures in an election. For anyone to call that a 'mandate', on either side, is asinine.

You weren't paying attention. Bush talked constantly about his Mandate.

Bush claims mandate, sets 2nd-term goals / 'I earned capital in this campaign, political capital, and now I intend to spend it'

2004-11-05 04:00:00 PDT Washington -- President Bush proclaimed his election as evidence that Americans embrace his plans to reform Social Security, simplify the tax code, curb lawsuits and fight the war on terror, pledging Thursday to work in a bipartisan manner with "everyone who shares our goals."

Bush staked his claim to a broad mandate and announced his top priorities at a post-election news conference, saying his 3.5 million vote victory had won him political capital that he would spend enacting his conservative agenda.

"I earned capital in this campaign, political capital, and now I intend to spend it," Bush told reporters. "It is my style."

As he had done in his victory speech Wednesday, Bush spoke of building a bipartisan consensus and reaching out to the 48 percent of Americans who voted against him. Yet he made plain that he had no intention of moderating his agenda to reach that goal.

"When you win, there is ... a feeling that the people have spoken and embraced your point of view," Bush said. "And that's what I intend to tell Congress, that I made it clear what I intend to do as the president; now let's work."

You need to get over Bush.

We have Obama's failed policies staring us in the face.

You and I are on two different pages. You totally support Obama and his policies and I don't.

You can try to misdirect all you want, but that doesn't work with me.

Obama is the one in control. He will accelerate his failing policies because his voters just proved they approve.

Stating a fact for the sake of comparison is not the same thing as "blaming" Bush. I stated a fact as a means to illustrate that we took off on an upward trajectory before Obama. You guys act like the economy was in a wonderful place until Obama the Muslim Communist Socialist Vegan took office. You need to acknowledge previous events and understand long term trends better.

I'm not acting like anything. I'm reacting to what's in front of me...Obama's policies.

Simple facts: I don't like Obama's policies and you Obama voters do.

He will accelerate his policies and I don't like what I see coming.

You just blamed Bush...

That's OK, so do I. But it really doesn't change the fact that Obama, since taking office in 2009 has done nothing that will turn things around, and has, in fact, made it FAR worse.
