I am going to start a topic here and wish to make a very clear request that the discussion and posts to follow remain civil, clean, and on topic. Why, you ask? Because, I may reference this thread in my fifth grade classroom of 25 students. SCHOOL APPROPRIATE, PLEASE.

Off to the lesson...

I was challenged to teach my students the concept of how large numbers can really be, essentially, comparing place values in a way that brings understanding to fifth graders to the magnitude of millions, billions, and if I dared, trillions.

I downloaded an ap on my iPhone that is a tap counter. I randomly selected a male and female student. Each student was allowed to tap as fast as they possibly could for 10 seconds. The ap counted their taps. The girl out tapped the boy, as I fully expected.

The class then statistically averaged the two scores together. To make the math easier (magnitude estimations) we rounded the final number to the nearest ten.

The final value was 50 taps in ten seconds.

I then played short clip of the presidential debates when the candidates were slinging around national debt figures: "1 Trillion $ per year for the last four years. 16 trillion currently in national debt."

I then told my students that they could earn $1 for each and every time they tap their finger.

The questions are as follows...

How much would you earn in an hour? Hourly wage?

How long would it take for you to earn $million, $billion, and ultimately $trillion?

Remember, we are assuming that your pace of tapping will never slow down, never pause, never stop, never fail in any way until you achieve your goal of 1 trillion.

It has been humorous watching educated adults fumble with the numbers.

Give it a try and I will monitor the responses on this thread. I might even allow my students to read through your comments using the smartboard in my classroom if everyone remains school appropriate.

Have fun... until you consider the national debt is currently of 16 trillion and growing. Take your final answer to the trillion tap challenge and multiply it by 16 and you will be staggered at the real life debt of our country.

I'll have a go.

Answers are in Bold Red.

50 taps in 10secs is 300 taps/min (50*6)
This gives 18,000 taps/hr (300*60)

Your hourly rate would be $18,000/hr

To earn:
$1,000,000 ÷ $18,000/hr =
55.56 hrs ÷ 24hr/day =
2.31 days ÷ 365days/yr =
.0063 yrs

$1,000,000,000 ÷ $18,000/hr =
55,555.56 hrs ÷ 24hr/day =
2314.81 days ÷ 365days/yr =
6.34 yrs

$1,000,000,000,000 ÷ $18,000/hr =
55,555,555.56 hrs ÷ 24hr/day =
2,314,814.81 days ÷ 365days/yr =
6,341.96 yrs

Of course the year figures are incorrect as I didn't bother figuring in leap years.

Did I pass?

The democrat logic will win. They expect someone to tap for them while the republican shouldnt tap more than 7 or 8 times an hour due to the extra effort going to a democrat.

only way ill ever make the jack is if i work at a cheese factory

Ask them to write out IOU slips to the Federal Government for their "fair share" of the national debt. Then make them take the slip home and have their parents sign and return on November 5th.

Nroof,

You pass with flying colors. Now figure how long it takes to reach 16 trillion, which is our current national debt.

The wealthy will simply have to tap more, faster, in order to do their fair share! The "Folks" with five Obama phones can tap 1/5 less having a phone under each finger.

Getting to the other question:
Are r/c heli pilots smarter than fifth graders?
Please warn the kids. If they become obsessed with politics, or helis, their brains will turn to mush in a matter of weeks.

Don't do politics, because politics is bad. Mmmmkayyyy?

The answer is 3,200,000,000,000.00

It's up to your students to figure out the units.
