FRAPS works fine for Phoenix, should for Realflight. Costs money though, but you can try a demo which only records 30 seconds.

MSI Afterburner uses a lot less overhead. Also, it's free. I have both it and Fraps and much prefer AB.

Are you sure about using afterburner as a screen recorder?
AFAIK its for monitoring and overclocking of your GPU.
The only screen capture options on mine is to take screenshots.

AND, if I remember correctly, to be able to use it in the first place you need to have a MSI graphics card, or one with a MSI BIOS.
Mine didn't so I had to reflash the BIOS to MSI so I could take advantage of the overclocking utilities.(not recommended unless you know 100% what you are doing or got a lot of money on hand(but why wouldn't you use that on helis instead?))

---------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm voting for Fraps as well but there are a few things to note:

1. Its really resource demanding, unless you have top notch hardware its going to slow down whatever application you are recording.

- To get around this you can use your sims built in recorder and record your flight and then play it back and then use Fraps to record the playback.
(a trick well known if you record games)

2. It uses lots and lots of space on your hard drive.
for instance, a 1 minute recording at 1080p at 30 fps will generally use ~3 GB of space.

You will need a video editing software to shrink it afterwards.
And you will get better results if you record to a different hard drive than the one your sim is running on.

A few other options to consider:

- Camtasia studio. Really like this one but its more for desktop recording and tutorials, generally lags in games and such.

- WeGame. Same as Fraps mostly but a lot less resource demanding. But then again the quality is not the same as Fraps. Best part is its totally free .

- Hypercam. No personal experience with this but I see it being used all the time.

- My Screen Recorder. No personal experience but I noticed RC Dbutz use it in his flight tutorials and it seems to work fine.

Sorry for long post.

You can use afterburner to record video and you can do it without owning an MSI product. I've used it numerous times to record BF3 game play and it works much better than fraps.

Well then. You learn something new every day.
I see that you are using 2.2.4 and I'm still on 2.0.0 so that explains it.
Think I might have to update and check it out.
Haven't done that since I reflashed my card ages ago

On a side note:
Can you still overclock and all that jazz without having an MSI card?

Yours look a tad different to mine but that might just be the version again.

Yes, I believe so. I have an EVGA 680 and an EVGA 470 before that are both overclockable with Afterburner. You do need to go into settings and change something to allow you to alter the core voltages.

I also have an MSI gaming laptop and Afterburner works the same way versus my non MSI products.

As the guy that does all of the RealFlight recording that you see on our web sites, I've found Fraps to be the best overall and it is what I use in all cases except those when I need to record everything on the screen (like picture in picture type stuff).

Hope this helps.

Most desktop recorders will do that for you.
You need something that records the output of the application directly and nothing else.

I stumbled upon this video recently and I must say I'm impressed.

I have been testing a little with some Kerbal Space Program silliness and massive Eve Online fights and so far I'm sold.

Just that one feature, Distribution HDD Writing, makes it worth it.

One license will run you about $45, or you can always find it on the vast internet if you look (not encouraging anyone to do so)

Check it out.
