Did Tim do just climbouts while lean or actually fly the model and keep it loaded? How long were the climbouts? Youngblood suggest nose bleed altitude climbouts fully loaded to heat up the engine. His nosebleed climbs are enough to make most pilots black out, if you get my drift.

McKrackin,

Flight only gently loads engine. Much time allowing engine to recover on midrange. Also, transitionto hover from flight relieves engine before hold is flipped.

Also, annoying sound is not engine note, but may be echoing of exhaust off of nearby trees or a bad rear bearing. What is bearing history and condition?

Engine doesnt appear excessively lean if lean at all. Ive had bad bearings make engines difficult to tune.

Try warming the engine up as shown in that flight. At half tank go up high and fly four of the biggest blue angel loops possible in a row. Keep them consecutive without backing off the throttle and collective, keep it loaded. At the end of number four, hit throttle hold and listen to the transition to idle. It should drop directly to an idle and just purr all the way down. Also, there should be plenty of smoke and power during the loops. Smoke will diminish during the loops if it is going lean, and the power will be missing if too rich.

Enjoy things that money can buy IF you don't lose the things money can't buy.

FYI...

You Don't really Tune YS Engines the Same as OS Engines... That could be the Root of this "My Favorite Pro tells me this" debate....

I am currently only flying OS engines, but I was flying YS when Curtis showed me and others how he tunes his engines at IRCHA. He took the time to walk us through his procedures at the flight line successfully although he made his disclaimer of, "I don't know about YS engines, as I only fly and have experience with OS". Well, his method still was very useful and productive. Changed my nitro enjoyment forever. The same basic principles apply.

I'm still trying to find that Jones video.

I just re-watched the Smacktalk video and Bert says it will hang on the pipe when you hit TH if the high needle is too lean.

But its not too lean...I already said it would but it would have to be lean enough to damage the engine..O-well,good luck..

Watch episode 1 yourself and skip to 23:00 to see and hear it hang on the pipe and Bert explains exactly why.

His engine didn't blow up either.lol...

Not arguing...just saying what he said.

Don't know why you delete your stuff all the time...Like a kid packing up his toys and stomping out of the sandbox.lol....

Like I said...Not arguing...just relaying what was said.

Usually hanging on the Pipe indicates the Engine is Hot. Wether it be from a lean high speed needle or inadequate cooling.

Just FYI...

That's exactly what Bert said...It was hot due to being excessively lean on the high needle.

It'll almost always be hot when it's lean though.lol...

I deleted them because of the exact same thing you did which is people seem to have a hard time reading whats said.I said DAMAGE the engine, you said "it didn't blow up" .When they showed in the videos what lean sounds like, the engine was damaged as in taken life away from the ring/liner.The engine can have the raspy sound from a bad tune which yours doesn't have or a lean idle needle..
Good luck...

You seem to have trouble reading what's said too.

We're not talking about my heli.

Talking about tuning tips from different videos.
