So we had a small FF last weekend and Scott Gray showed up with a couple of his models. One was setup for 3D using a 3 bladed head. The other was a speed demon (over 200km) at ircha. Anyway he was using the JR tags01 in both helis.

After watching Scotty and a couple other guys fly these units it got me thinking. Why is there not more people flying them. They look great (never tried one yet) easy to setup (no pc or amp box needed) Everything is done in the radio. Here is a vid of Scott Gray showing how to set the fbl unit up.

So anyone who has flown one, is flying one please jump in and let us know what you think of this unit!

Mine was here
https://rc.runryder.com/t652485p2/

Sold the heli and the Tags01

Pretty pleased with it but I'm sure the V2 would be smaller and has better (easier setup) features

The only "requirement" is that you can assign one channel to control the tail gain ( like your gear channel ), and then a aux channel to control the swash gain.
Thats it when it comes to radio requirement.
If you whant it "perfect" you can also use a third aux channel.
And this will allow you to control the elevator and ail seperate.

Cheers

Why is there not more people flying them.
Once upon a time, back in the old days when there where only tail gyros, well..... JR gyros were, well difficult....., and not really known for their ability to "hold" consistently. Not trying to start a fight here. Just saying, mine didn't work, all that well, for me.

Anyway, the unit itself looks like something out of the forties, and although they may have got it sorted out, (the old "hold" issue that is) there are not a lot of willing participants, obviously, to pay them to be a tester.

Yea, the reps are going to be flying them, but thats why they are reps. And I've seen reps make a turd fly, and look good doing it.

Good luck, and keep us posted.

Thats the problem. Why keep "you posted" when the mind is already set..
It looks old, but works great for me, and I love the feeling.
Swaped out all my 3 beast X for this system.
But I now that dont prove a damn thing...
Just saying..

Back on topic.
Just let me know if you have any more questions about the system..

cheers

Unfortunately JR has lowered their presence in the US in recent years, albeit intentionally or not. I believe in large part due to their pricing, which never prevented me from owning Vibe 50's and an SG, but parts availability became an issue. I fly JR electronics exclusively. As well, the XG series is still not available here, at least legally. These issues alone will prevent wide spread adoption of the TAG01, regardless of performance. Just my opinion!

I would guess that interest is low because it seems out of touch with other products it is competing against. An easy example is no S.Bus or Spektrum/JR satellite support. And, lots of pots which are more things to go wrong (they are mechanical and subject to use, dirt, dust, exhaust, vibration, etc.).

Not to mention "only 1520uS servo support", many I know could not even test them as they do not own JR tail servos which is virtually the only good 1520uS servo out there.

I have been assisting setting up and test flying a Tags system in a large Turbine Lynx.
It works very well and feels very solid when flying.
Using 3 x normal JR8411 on the CCPM without any problems.
Can't remember what's on the tail, other than its a high power JR servo.
The set up instructions are very simple, but then they just leave you alone when it comes to test flying and adjusting - certainly could do better there.

only 1520uS servo support is the biggest drawback so far.
I use the new wide voltage bls HALL sensor servo from JR:

http://www.jrradios.com/Products/De...odID=JRPSMPH83G

Works good for my type of flying.
Cant say if i think its better/worse then my old beast X setup and MKS DS760 narrow band servo.
Some hotshot 3D pilot will have to do that test.

I know the technical bit behind narrow vs normal band servos.
But in real life scenario i dont know..
Accuracy/centering/speed/holding power must also be taking in account im sure..

But I do know it will keep away people from trying it.
And that is a shame, as i love how the system flies..

I will be trying one soon. It looks like Jr has a profile for the E6 550.
Which is perfect because that will be my next heli.

Bigsweede, I didnt know the hall sensor servos were out yet. I'll try one after I wear out the MP80g.

I recently bought a Nex E6, (the 500 size), complete kit with TAGS01 and JR servos. Setting up tha TAGS01 went easy, done exactely by the manual, but I'm having some problems.

For one, both cyclic and piro speed is very low. I have increased swash mix values and its now at 70, and with DR 100. Its not very slow, but for shure not fast either. The tail ended up setting EPA 150 and DR 100 and its still veeery slow.

Next, I'm having trouble with oscillation on the elevator axis. I have no issues when flying soft 3D, but as soon as I pick up a little forward speed it starts oscillating. (Tail pumps fast up/down with hard blade noise). I have lowered the gain pot from stock mid position and gradually down to min position. The tendency only get worse.

I tried to replace it with a mini-Vbar and then there is no oscillation in FFF. I can go really fast with no problems. Cyclic speed and piro rate is now very fast, or can get as fast as I like to.

I dont use a gain channel from the radio. Only use pots. I checked on the Gtune, and mid pot position is gain 100, and min pot position is gain 50. (On a scale from 0-150). I tried by the way adding the radio gain, just on the bench, to see how gain changes. Then gain can be further lowered to 0, then further again from 0-100 in the normal mode range.

With the aileron pot in the almost lowest position (gain 53) I took some snapshots of the Gtune, showing gain values and control parameters. I dont know much about regulators, but I think D gain seems high? I havent touched any values by the way.

Anybody else heard of simular problems? By reading here on RR everybody seems very happy with the TAGS01. I would like to solve this an keep using mine too.

Some pitures of the heli too. Nice machine

The slow cyclic and tail is beacuse you are flying it in "normal" mode.
Tags got 2 modes hard coded into the unit, "normal" for F3C hovering flying, and "stunt" for 3D flying.

You switch between those modes, using the gear/gain channel.

If you fly in "normal" mode and feel the cyclic is to slow, and then try to slove that with more swash AFR or with DR, you doing it wrong, and will most likely develop unwanted behaviour.

Page 28 in the manual explains this.

And on page 38 it shows you how to switch between the modes, "normal" and "stunt".

http://www.jrpropo.co.jp/english/dl..._UserManual.pdf

First you hover the heli in "normal" mode, here you set your gains for that mode.
I start with around 1600rpm ( on a 700 size heli ), and around -20% exp and around 70% dualrate on my JR radio.
Then I make some fast cyclic inputs and look for excessive oscillation.
Then I land and adjust what need to be adjusted.
Done!

Then I switch to "stunt" mode on the tags01 unit, and Idleup 1.
Around 2000rpm, -15 expo and around 80% dualrate.
Do some fast FF flying, flips, rolls etc etc, and look for oscillation.
Land and adjust.
Done.
