If you can afford it and want it...who cares what anybody thinks. No matter what you buy today, there's a newer, better version coming out tomorrow

Why would you buy a $3,000 radio? Because someone had me at gunpoint and said stick em up. Besides that if money was no object, I'm sure Id have one too. I'm sure there nice radios, color touch screen must be nice. I'm afraid I don't have that kind of disposable income, I'd drop those kind of beans on a nice heli and squeek by like a red headed step child with my $400 radio first.

Even a stopped clock is right twice a day

I've had my grubby hands on a 14MZ before....not worth it to me. But my opinion means jack diddly on what someone else thinks.

I bought one as a replacement for my 14 that i've used since it came out. Its a hobby, and i wanted one, and i could just about barely afford it. If we worked on the principal of "why buy this" or "rationalising buying that", we'd all still be flying shuttles.

Is it necessary??? Nope, but if you want it, its your money, go for it..

Kinda reminds me of this:

Why would you buy a $3,000 radio?
Same reason I dropped $1400 or so on a Futaba 9ZHPS system back in the '90s. Why? Because it was the best/tier one "world class professional" radio they had out at the time. Now, I'm happy with a "lowly" $300 DX8 because I never used that Futaba to probably even a quarter of its potential. Crazy ass complicated programming, too!

an iphone is a very small fraction smaller and does a heck of a lot more for a fraction of the cost of a 18 whatever......
Absolutely invalid comparison because you didn't consider economy of scale. They make and sell about a gigabajillion iPhones, as compared to the very few and rather esoteric high end Futaba radios that they would ever sell. It will take them MUCH longer to cover start-up and development costs on that radio. Apple crossed that line with the iPhone long ago...

Its goofy too because theres no boutique retailers, youre still walking into a little rc shop and walking out paying their rent for the month.
NO, you aren't. How much do you think that little LHS paid for the radio to get it in stock in the first place? Most likely, 75% (or more) of the selling price.

Why would anyone buy a $5000 watch when a $100 Seiko can tell just as accurate time?

I wish!!! I got a prepaid throw away type phone.I use it when I talk long distance, trading and such. Never had a cell phone like you guys have. Never will, cost to much. Rich mans phone.

Home phone is landline and local calling only, but it has CID.
Ditch your landline and go cell phone only if you get excellent reception at your house. It might even be cheaper and, if you want, you'll have two-way comms with you at all times for whenever the need may arise...and they do arise... No roaming charges and free long distance on our Verizon plan. I pay about the same as I did for our single landline with "free" long distance and that's with two cell phones and 800 shared minutes/month, which is WAY more than we ever use. Free texting, too, if you're into that. Oh, got called ID with that plan, as well.

I just use the free clock that came with my cell phone.

Even cheaper! But you still have to pay your monthly charges!

Because, to some, it is a functional jewelry/fashion statement. To others, it is a fetish(well maybe not that strong).

Whether $3K is expensive or not, it's all relative.

If a guy soaks $10K into a turbine jet and have a fleet of them, wouldn't he want to invest in some top of the line radio with more feature than he'll ever needs so it's future proof? $3K is probably a drop in the bucket in this case.

Asking this type of question is like asking "why would people spend $280K on a Lamborghini when a Hyundai can also get me to work?"

You pay for the exclusivity. And trust me, there IS a market for this.
