I have an 18MZ used to replace my 14MZ. I don't go around bragging about it or making a point to show it off. It is a tool to me and a darn good one. I fly contests with both helicopters and 30%+ airplanes and have yet to find something I want the radio to do that I cannot get it to do. It is comfortable, fast, and accurate. The battery lasts 8hrs+ and the features are amazing, no satelites or extra stuff required. I am just now figuring out the S Bus features and am in awe. I run 6.6V unregulated through my systems and they are working as expected, accurate and quick.
In the past I have used the 9V, 9VH, 9Z, 9ZWC, 9ZWC2, 14MZ, and now the 18MZ. Each was a step up from the last and I cannot imaging the genius required to just figure out what features to include in a new tranmitter. There are programming items that I use daily now that I would NEVER have thought of ten years ago. All my flybarless stuff is transmitter adjustable for the most part and it makes trimming much simpler and faster.
I expect that as development goes on, all of it will be adjustable from the tx and cannot wait to see how the new generation of stuff works. Is it worth the price, depends on your point of view I guess. It certainly has been for me to have top of the line stuff over the years. I certainly would never question someone's "organ" because of a radio system but then I'm more than 12 years old.

If you want it and can afford it, who cares? People have closets full of $3000 suits, $10,000 couches etc. When some of us have $30,000 worth of heli's it doesn't seem out of line to me. I wish someone would make a 8 channel tx that felt great with awesome sticks and telemetry for $1000. Not a plastic box.

I'd buy a 18MZ if I was:

#1. Able to afford it

and

#2. Still flying planks

There is a lot of cool stuff you can do with that radio. I'd buy a 18MZ and a turbine jet with retracts and flaps and airbrakes. That would be cool. I think it would be fun to try out.

All I really need for my FBL helicopters are a simple 6 channel radio. Planks are different. You need a lot of mixing and such to make them fly well.

The only thing is the top FBL systems in the world with the exception of the Futaba is not made by radio manufacturers. Only systems ever going to be adjustable from a TX will have to made by Futaba or JR.

Pretty hard to argue the Mikado Vbar is not top dog. Not much of a leg to stand on when it comes to contest flying.

Also adjusting everything from a TX no matter HOW much it can do is as nice as from a laptop/tablet. Bigger screen is killer. Also after couple of flights I can leave my tablet/laptop at home I know my FBL system so well.

To each his own. I see it more for airplanes. Big 33+%'s with 3 servos per aileron and etc.

If Apple or Google made TX's and the ability they had for innovation was put into it I'd still rather have a tablet to adjust my heli. Being able to see most everything on one screen is something you need a ipad sized device to do. IMO.

To each his own. This is a hobby. What part of any of this do we "need"? If someone wants it, it is completely their business to own one and enjoy it.

Do you need one to compete? Of course not. Maxwell or Dahl can fly circles around any of us with a base bottom end TX ad we know it. Magic is in fingers on TX, not the TX.

It's kind of funny how there's so many opinions on the value of a $3000. radio, or any thing else in this hobby. I agree, to each his own! I was flying my Heli one day and a guy came up to watch with his wife. He told me he flew the airplanes many, many years ago, and he was interested in getting back into the hobby but with Heli's. He asked about price and I told him that for some 'good' equipment plan on about $1200 Dollars. He needed everything. Well he was moaning and groaning about the cost and that might be a little much. His wife then chimed in and told him to SHUT UP ! Then she told me that he just lost $2800.00 on the blackjack tables in Las Vegas a few weeks ago and that he complains about the price of everything, except When he gambles! So go figure! I'm glad I don't have vices to drain money out of my Heli fund !

The thread title was about "Why would you buy a $3000 radio". I don;t care if others do or whether they can even make an arguement for doing so. My answer to the question is that I simply wouldn't buy a $3000 radio. I have a 10CHP module based which allows me to fly any 72Mhz channel FM or PCM as well as FAAST 2.4. It wasn't expensive when I bought it and it certainly doesn't have a lot of retained value now so I don't have to stress where I sit it down and if I get caught in a sprinkle I don;t have to panic that my $3000 transmitter got a little wet. I don't fly competition any more so I don't need any more features than I have. I can see the convenience of some onboard adjustability for flybarless setup....if I was flying flybarless.

The comparison between these radios an smartphones is interesting. I have a Galaxy S3 as I considered it the best I could get at the time and would not buy apple under any circumstances.

However, I have no need of 99% of its features and so I pay $100 a YEAR for a pre paid phone plan and rarely use it for anything other than outgoing phone calls. If I need one of its other features I am usually near enough to either my home or RV where I can hook into my wifi and get on line.

So, I paid a lot of money for something I WANTED, but didn't NEED, and I am happy with that. If I wanted an 18MZ, I would have one, whether I needed it or not.

I agree with Peter. i just bought an DX18, i work the local hobby shop, had a Dx8, a 9303, plus a couple other radios.. so I got to playing with it one day for a couple hours and decided I HAD TO HAVE IT! I do fly planes and thinking of buying a multi engine bomber in the future and some of the programming on this one will make a few things a lot easier. i did NOT need the radio, BUT... since i got it almost 30% of ticket prics, what the hell? sold both my DX8 and 9303, only had to put tax money with it.. so i traded up to the DX18 for 60 bucks.

did i need it? NO! but I shouldnt EVER have to buy another radio again.. well, until something else comes along 30% off ticket that i just gotta have.

and so far.. I love it!
