Just curious if anyone has either tried flying a flybarred helicopter without a gyro, or tried flying a fbl helicopter without a fbl controller.

Hi

Yes, i did...... i failed to glue the VBar sensor cable into the VBar and it came out!!!!

Was a wild ride until i got it under control and then nursed it home. The tail was probably the hardest part to control.

Would NOT recommend it.

Regards
Paul

Wanna see video from 1987 Curtis demo flight after the World Championships. All backwards inverted with mechanical gyro, no tail issues.

I did it just for fun with no controller or gyro, It was flybarred and a handful. I did manage to take of and land with no damage. It was a 600 t rex. It wasn't pretty and not fun!

I've thought about trying just to see how hard it really is to fly without a stabilization system.

Just be careful, its very squirrely. I would try it with parts you don't mind crashing.
If you try it give us a report on how you make out.

FBL without a controller is possible, has been done by many.

Helicopters came BEFORE gyros, yes, many of us learned to fly and did fly quite often without a gyro.

Neither is a task of great difficulty, it requires practice like any other flying related task.

no stabi on FBL is not a REAL big deal (I had a FBL Legend before stabi), but no gyro on tail??? That's a different story.
All my stick time back in the day was on old 153BB and 154 Futaba mech gyros.

I tried it with a 450 Sport, converted an existing flybar head to flybarless and it was quite different. The rolls and flips were Insanely Fast-- especially front flips, it seemed like 1/100 th of a second to complete a revolution. But overall it was not fun to fly--- more of an exercise in preventing a Crash. I think my experiment would have been more successful by adding a bunch of expo, weighted mainblades and longer blade grip pitch link arms.

Yes to both. Learned on a Kalt Baron 28 without a gyro. Couldn't afford a tail gyro.

FBL yes. Always flight test Total G's with it off on maidens. Helis very stable in a hover, nothing out of the ordinary. Same with forward flight as long you don't get herky jerky, because it responses very quickly. This is whenever transitioning from one flight regime to another such as stable straight and level flight to a turn or st & level to a descent. Just use smooth and small movements like pressure against your cyclic stick.

If you want to try the feel of flying without a tail gyro, just flip it to rate mode.

Rate mode is still help from the gyro, just not as locked in, if you really want the true experience --plug your tail servo directly into the rudd. ch. of your receiver and get ready

Here's me flying NOBAR style three years ago. I converted a Kyosho Caliber5 with an Outrage fbl conversion head and that's it.
The tail is controlled by a 611 gyro.
EDGE fbl blades make all the difference flying NOBAR.

I realize that it is still help, but we don't need a bunch of crashed heli's all over the country. It still gives you the concept because it will float around.
