I live in Massachusetts and I am having a real hard time buying any heli related items. I do not enjoy ordering online. Either no one sells heli stuff or thier mark up is way too much. I understand it's hard to compete and do not mind paying a little more but when my LHS wants to charge quadruple for everything it's a slap in the face. I suppose I need to live with it. It's just too bad that after hitting just about every store in a one hour radius of me I can't find a decent shop.

I have recently found out that my LHS will price match the internet. If they want the sale that's the only way to go

My local hobby store only carries the blade heli line so I end up having to order most everything as it is anyway.

You guys have to realize the amount of overhead the brick and mortar shops have...its pretty tough to price match an online retailer that doesn't have those expenses. A good hobby shop is going to be there to support you with the hobby...not to many online retailers going to help with that.

I understand they have additional costs but charging two three or four times as much as an online retailer is greedy.

I have two hobby shops to use, and they both have very helpful owners and staff - I buy from them occasionally, but I mostly order online because these hobby shops don't stock all parts, and they place orders as needed, and that means another trip back to their store when it arrives, whereas I get it faster from the online shops, most often free shipping, and delivered to my door.

Hog Heaven Hobbies in Sturbridge has a growing heli inventory, pricing competetive with on line, and if they don't have it, they can get in in a matter of days and you don't pay shipping. They are within a 30 minute drive from Worcester. I get good parts support there for Eflite, Align, and Thunder Tiger

If you can deal with a 45 minute drive, R/C Hover is another destination. I believe R/C Hover is a RR advertiser, have a great web store, and the brick and mortar store is well worth the visit. I head to R/C Hover when I need Gaui parts.

Adamz,
that is not true either.. since some of the largest Heli Online retailers are also B&M LHS.

Rons Heliproz South
ReadyHeli
Grand
all have B&M stores and ship from them as well.

LHS need to carry more and also sell online if they want to stay in the game these days.

we have a great LHS down here if you are a car guy or a planker.. but the heli section is all Blades and some Aligns.. not much help for anything else.

I try to make most of my purchases @ my local hobby shop Don Still's Hobby Haven. I'm into the Mirco's now and Don stocks the parts for my 130X which makes it nice if you need anything.

Another advantage is his support as I've seen him replace a new heli that didn't fly correctly and send it back to Horizon himself.

You might pay alittle more but to me it's worth it for the service.

I emailed rchover which is a LHS. I asked them what the price is for a 6S lipo. He stated they started at $200'and $160 for an economical battery. Thier website has them for a third of the price which got me extremely frustrated. Again, I don't mind paying a little extra....

I never said all online retailers weren't helpful. Helinutandy, the particular shop your dealing with does sound extreme and I probably wouldn't do business there either...

Hmmm ... Why wouldn't they quote you the price they have on their website? Are you sure they weren't talking about name brand batteries and when you looked on their site you were looking at a lesser name Chinese clone ... ?

I buy a lot of smaller replacement parts at my LHS. For the most part they are competitive w/ online, will pull in something quickly for me if they don't have it (they have a pretty good stock and usually have what I need) and don't charge shipping although I do pay tax. For batteries though, they ONLY cary Thunder Power and for my flying skills at the moment they're overkill - I get my batteries online ...

I buy my fuel from the LHS. Thats about it. They don't carry any of the heli parts that I need. They do carry the Blade line like so many other LHS do.

HeliNutAndy You never even went to the store and you are complaining, sounds like you have an axe to grind. Nobody can get out of line with the internet. I have bought a lot from RC Hover, Jeremy will usually match any online price. If a price is listed on his site you will be able to buy it for that price.

I try to buy as much as possible from the local shop. One of the main reasons I bought another eflite heli (from the LHS) is so I can get parts same day from them when I crash.

I try to buy whatever I can from the LHS. It's not always a better deal, and frankly, I can often get the parts from RH sooner than I can get around to making it to the LHS.

But they've got good people working for them, it's a fun place to check in, and they've helped friends of mine I've gotten into the hobby, so I'm good with it.

The only time I'm torn over this is when I buy an Align heli, which I'm probably done doing. GrandRC has these custom combo deals (they pick the parts out of the kits and swap, which is really a great feature if you don't want to have to sell a 3GX or something). I feel a little guilty buying from them and then trotting in to the LHS for parts and advice, but I know that I crash my Align stuff often enough that I flow the $$ to the LHS in the end.

Given that once you're flying at size, this hobby is a horrific money pit, so getting nickel-and-dime over the LHS prices is just lame.

It definitely helps that the LHS is truly into the hobby, and that they sell at MAP/list, as far I know. I would be very unhappy if they weren't around, and while I know that my business won't make or break them, that's how I think about it.

[Actually, for a while there, my 550E episodes might have put somebody's kid through college or into new dental braces, Statements above reflect amortization of my contribution to their fluidity over multiple fiscal years on a cash basis.]

oops, bounced it!
