The dude doing the interview is a real moron, he has no clue. The pilot was using an SD-10G for the radio and seemed very level headed about the whole affair unlike the interviewer. Maybe the pilot is a member here on RR. The Hexrotor looked real nice too. Great Fab work.

No one would have given this situation a second thought if there had been a state owned Jet Ranger out there with a photographer hanging out the side door doing the same thing.

Thanks for posting Hoot, nice find.

The pilot is a personal friend of mine who has been helping me with my rig. He does hang out here on RR.

The interviewer is a moran. It is like the government is after him. Is afraid that they are going to weaponize a drone and then let the drone decid who it can kill, gzzzzz.

Very well handled interview, though I'm not seeing $6-8K in that rig. $3-4K was probably right in the ball park.

Not sure what to think of the interviewer's motivation to elicit some kind of reaction from the pilot. Fear is birthed from ignorance I suppose...

Maybe the pilot is counting the setup time and the time put into getting all the stuff together for the build.

I don't see anything wrong with what the pilot was doing. It seemed to me that he was working a contract job for the state or county and then the interviewer wants to somehow morph the situation into a drone invasion. I'm not seeing that. Our aircraft may by definition be "drones" but they certainly aren't autonomous.

If a guy like that came up to me doing the same thing, I would tell him a bloated number just to see how much of an idiot he is.

He is just taking survey pictures for a new possible road project.

The guy in the video
I am the guy in the video. When I was approached by Alex, I had no idea that he was a talk show host. It quickly became clear that I needed to remain cordial and factual to let him see there was no story here.

Regarding the figure quoted by me being high, I was quoting the investment in my aircraft and equipment to support flying in a remote location which includes a honda generator, field computer, etc.

Hope that helps.

Robert

Wow, the interviewer has a clear conspiracy theory bias. Check his website and you see he approaches every story from that angle. It's good to be informed but I tire of these kind of people.

Walks up to the pilot from behind and in a load voice .......
Trying to get the pilot to crash ???? Better story for him, bad news for RC.
Guess we all have had some idiot walk up from behind and try to distract us.

You did a great job handling that nut, who still tried to make it a government conspiracy story. What you are doing is saving the local government (tax payers) big bucks.
By the way, that looks the same as my hex, with NAZA, but I haven't added my GPS option yet.

Paul,

It is 640mm shaft to shaft on motors. Use aluminum box tubing for simplicity of design, lighter weight than production carbon designs, and ability to wick heat from the motors and esc with prop blast. I end up flying in conditions exceeding 110 degrees F.

My stabilized gimbals and vibration dampening are of my design. Wasn't particularly interested in sharing it with the world, guess that is kind of moot now :-) Probably isn't that special, but it works well for me.

AUW: 7lb 4oz

Battery: 2-6000mah 3S Nanotech Turnigy

Props: Gemfan 11", could go to 12" and increase flight time and stay within amp limits but it does not seem to fly as smoothly in choppy air with 12".

Camera: Sony Nex 5N @ 16 oz with kit lens (you can drop about 3 oz with 16mm pancake)

Flight Controller: Wookong M

Flight Time: E-Calc says over 12 minutes if willing to fly down to 3.5 per cell or 10.5 total. It varies so much how far down you are willing to take batteries and wind conditions. I generally fly max 6 to 8 minute flights.

Robert,

I salute you for your extreme candor in dealing with that guy. Obviously he was trying to get you to say anything that would agree with the crap he was spewing.

It is VITAL that ignorant people like him understand the difference between private operators like ourselves flying LOS and fully autonomous craft being operated by government agencies.

Maybe next time you need to string up some police line tape for your LZ so you don't get harassed by people like that

Thanks camerawings.
Mine is:
4S Turnegy 4000mah
6.0 Lbs with every thing including Canon Power Shot SX130is
Tubular aluminum arms
Motors Turnegy D2830/100Kv
ESC Turnigy 25A AE-25A (Can not use programming card with this ESC)
Props 10x4.5 will try 12 inch later.
520 mm between closest motor shafts, 1020 mm across center plate motor shaft to motor shaft. (This is the longest, but will shorten to experiment with shorter arms, my motor mounts can slide along tube so easy to try different lengths)
Flight time 8 mins down to 3.6 volts per cell
Flight current is 26 amps
NAZA flight controller with GPS (not yet mounted)
.
.
By the way, here is a great little talking timer that counts down the mins/sec. It is clear and loud so I never have to look at it for remaining time. Even if you have OSD it's nice to be reminded when the time is up.

CameraWings, applause to you, interviewer kept interrupting you and wanted to stir things a little. From the map you held up it looks like land on either side of the highway was undeveloped or farmland.

Here's the link to OFFIcER.com about the drones used to hunt and kill people, sick, http://www.officer.com/news/1044387...d-carry-weapons

Interviewer is looking out for the sheeple, I guess.
