I'm putting together my FBL head and ordered a set of these dampeners. Once I tightened the grips down on the feathering shaft the rips are pretty tight when you try and rotate them. Is this normal with these? Is there a particular direction they need to go in? Bumpy side first or smooth side first?

I had this, check that the plastic feathering shaft support that goes through the head block is fitted correctly. You may have it 90 deg out of line.
The hole where the feathering shaft passes through is oval to allow the shaft to move. This movement is restricted by the dampeners.
