I'm getting a Droidworx Octo to lift a 5DII, what are the best motors, ESC's and props for the job?

Take a look into the Avroto motors. Also, get a hold of some 30a Turnigy Plush 30, or HK "RedBrick" 30aESC's, and either flash them or have someone flash them with the SimonK firmware. I have found this combination to be optimal for larger hexa/octo setups. You can get an AVR programmer to flash the software to the ESC, and use the kkmulticopter Flash Tool which makes the whole job easier.

Listen to Hans...I did and no regrets what so ever! I went with the 40amp controllers....just what I was able to get. I haven't flashed mine yet...someday if I can figure out how to. If you are building a Octo, make sure you get a controller that can handle it. I made that mistake by ordering a Naza (only up to Hex), but because I bought the UAP1 by Rusty (again, more great advice from here), I was able to convert back to hex with no problems. Flies great. You probably already knew this, but hope it helps.

Hans, Thanks for that great information. I'll have to get back to you when the time comes to flash the esc's. How important is this and what does it improve?

sjgusmc21, I was going to get the WooKong-M but did not think if this does more than 6 motors. Do you now if it controls 8 motors?

Sorry, I do not. But I am sure you can probably go to their website and down load the manual, as I know you can with the Naza, etc. I had to do quite a few google searches before I found a post with the same problem I had.

Just had a look on their site and it says it will run 8 so that is excellent.

Wookong-M is great, but I would also look at the Mikrocopter stuff. It's getting more and more available. If you end up wanting to go the Mikrocopter route, let me know and I can put you in touch with a friend who is a wealth of knowledge with Mikrocopter stuff. I'm sure he would not mind helping you out. The Wookong-M is supposed to be a breeze to setup though. I've been there for a config, but not done one myself. I'm going to do a Mikrocopter setup out of sheer curiosity, but not in the next few weeks. I'll post up when I do though.

As far as the reflash of the ESC's with SimonK's firmware... Check out the pages on RCG, OpenPilot.org, etc regarding his flash. In a nutshell, better performance a really indescribable increase in efficiency and responsiveness, a different sound signature (have to hear to understand), and it's designed specifically for multirotor applications.

Thank you for the extra information, I have only just seen it.

I hear stories that some esc's are not compatable with the Wookong-M. Have you used 30a Turnigy Plush 30, or HK "RedBrick" 30aESC's with the Wookong-M?
