One camera to look at is the Sony NEX5N. Takes great photos and videos. Has interchangeable lens.

For triggering it your remote, you can use this.
http://www.gentles.ltd.uk/gentled/auto.htm

For viewing it remotely you will have to use a couple of things. Here is what I used.

For converting from HDMI to Component video.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...ils_o01_s00_i01

And I used this for the downlink.

Hey guys, I ordered the Sony NEX IR trigger from Gentles Limited about 3 weeks ago and it still hasn't arrived. Anyone know what's up with that company? I got an email that said it was shipped via airmail on August 15th. Seems like I should have gotten it by now. It certianly doesn't just take that long for something to be flown from Scotland! Does it normally take a long time to get things from them?

You should get it soon. It took mine a while also. If it has been 3 weeks you should have it any day now.Signature

Connecting the camera is very simple. Camera to converter is done with an HDMI cable. You just need standard on one end to converter with mini on the other end to camera.

Low cost small and reasonable quality
Hi folks
I appreciate that the Sony Nex5 is top end quaility as, I guess, is the GoPro HD. I have just got my DJI 550 and I am looking for a low cost small camera to mount on it to provide reasonable quality pictures with the ability to stop and start the video using the standard receiver. Iintially it won't be gimbal mounted but this would be the next logical step! Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

You have to understand that the GoPro Hero 2 is more of a toy than a serious camera. Yes it can record in HD, but it will always have that gimmicky fish eye look. If you use the narrow mode much of the fish eye look is still there and the resolution goes to crap. The camera uses digital zooming to reduce fish eye (narrow the FOV).

The GoPro also lacks any stabilization system. Rolling shutter and bouncy video is what you will get from the GoPro. You can soft mount it with something like Zeal tape, but it will always be poor quality video.

To improve the GoPro video you can use post processing software like Adobe Premier Pro's Warp Stabilizer to smooth it out. However, the software cost $1800 or you can rent it for the year at $49/month.

The good about the GoPro is it is relatively cheap/inexpensive. You can also eliminate the fish eye with an aftermarket lens. But that will add another $100 to the cost of the camera. Many aftermarket lenses make it where the case no longer fits, so choose carefully. The other good about the GoPro Hero 2 is the WiFi backpack. You can control the camera functions from as far away as 600 feet. GoPro is supposedly coming out with an app that will allow direct streaming of video to a smartphone, laptop, tablet, etc. with the WiFi backpack. It will be available in Fall of 2012 according to their website.

Back to the Sony NEX 5N. An updated model, NEX 5R, is coming out in October. It will add WiFi and a better, faster AF system to the NEX 5 series.

GoPro
Well thanks for the info. I got a GoPro Hero and have mounted it on the pan and tilt GoPro mount from Firstpersonflying. It works well BUT the videos seem to be out of focus. I can only think its vibration, has anybody got any ideas?

You may have gotten a bad unit. The GoPro is focused to infiniti. I have never heard of one being out of focus, unlike keychain cameras which are almost out.

Did you get the Hero , Hero 2 or Hero 3? The original Hero has a low quality plastic lens. It is not as crisp as the Hero 2 or 3.

If the video is blurring, it is probably just vibration. Try soft mounting it. My GoPro Hero 2 does quite well with Zeal tape or some other gel type mounting tape.

Nikon D3100
Hi
I am getting into AP, right now I´m converting a Trex700N to E , and stretching it to 800 , but besides heli flying I´m also into amateur photography , and was thinking about mounting my Nikon D3100 camera on the heli , has any one tried this on a AP heli?
BTW , I still don´t know how to solve the remote triggering , but probably could just use a servo.

All help is welcome!

Is the picture clear when handheld, vs blurry on the heli? If so, then it's probably vibration.

Check out Gentled for all kinds of RC triggers.

For video in a lightweight camera I highly recommend the GH2 with one of the high-bitrate "hacks" that are out there.
