The NEXT Cellpro PowerLab from FMA/Revolectrix
Now that the PL8 is 2+ years old, I thought it would be a good idea to start a "users input" thread on what we'd like to see changed or added.

For a new name, I'll suggest "PowerLab Xxtreme" or "PowerLab Gold"

#1 Shorter case size. (Many of us are building charging cases and the height of the PL8 (91mm or over 3.5" makes it harder to fit in a case).

#2 Shorter wait/pack assessment time when starting a charge.

#3 Capability to charge 7s-8s (non-Revolectrix) packs without modification/custom balance taps. 7s Lipo packs are becoming more common.

#4 Capability to charge/monitor (2) separate pack's cells individually.

#5 Capability to check pack/cell voltage quickly.

#6 Bright LED near display set to light:

RED - Charging
YELLOW - Balancing/90% Charged
GREEN - Charge Done

Flashing RED - check error codes

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
FMA has the BEST chargers available... Period. Never stop improving!

ps, I think there's a similar "feature" thread somewhere but I can't find it so my apologies if my ideas are already on the list.

If we are going to make it an XXtreme charger how about.

QR scan code pack identification.

Logging of pack charge to an on board SD card that can be reviewed using software on a pc. To track items such as IR, MA over time etc.

Using the QR code track the # of charges and total ma replenished over time.

The ideas for the next powerlab are great but I would not be willing to pay more for it than what I paid for my powerlab 8v2. More bells and whistles equals bigger price tag.Damn that ground is hard! When's the right time to get out of this money sucking hobby?

I think it wil be a while before the functionality of the Powerlab 8 will be surpassed. I have 2 of them myself and am very happy with their performance. But i would be willing to shell out a little more for a powerlab 8 style charger with on board charge logging and data trending via sd card to pC software.

But pack recognition would have to be through RFID tags or QR scan labels. Having to choose through keypad scrolling would get tired very fast.

a nice alu case with better protection for the screen. The screen has a soft plastic that gets easily dinged up with field manipulation.Life is meaningful flying helis.

I am on my 3rd Cellpro 4S charger and it is starting to fail with the same symptom as the previous two. Perfectly good batteries are going into Safe mode charging due to apparent voltage fluctuations. These either stabilize or fluctuate more if I wiggle the balancing connector. So it appears to be another problem with the balancing connector's soldering to the circuit board. I really like the technology, and am tempted to buy the new Multi 4 or PL6 as a replacement hoping it will last longer. Has anyone else had similar problems with the Cellpro chargers?

Karl, I had 2 Cellpro 4s chargers for a long time and neither one ever had any issues.

I'd highly suggest a PL6

+1

While we are fixing the weak exterior/screen, more robust electronics would also be nice. Mine took a dump and had to be sent in for repairs at $90 plus shipping.

I like the idea of the QR code on batteries which could be read by the charger. Each pack could be linked to its own specific fuel map. This would make the 1C and 2C charge rates faster.

Have owned the same Cellpro4s since 2007 and it continues serve my small battery needs quite well. Over the years I have run into this same issue and more than once concluded the charger was at fault. However, here is what I have found that corrected it.

I use a balance adapter which plugs into the Cellpro and the packs plug into the adapter. The pins in male plug on the adapter, over time can loosen or need cleaning. Likewise the pins on the female side may need some cleaning from time to time. A good quality contact cleaner and a toothbrush can be quite helpful for the female side.

On teh male side, I will sometimes pull the pins out of adapter and gently squeeze them together to get a more firm fit. I've also replaced the adapter, or replaced the end with a new end.

Thanks, Gregor, that's excellent advice. I always use adaptors, and try to change them as rarely as possible to reduce wear on the charger's connector. That means soldering the same balancing connector on all my batteries (but I have been lazy and have a couple of JST-XH while the rest are Hyperions at the moment). I shall find time this weekend, and then also do the rest of your suggestions.
